If you could build a comp right now, what would it have?

So? What would you do? Not saying like a Dream Machine with a $5000 budget. But lets say you had around $2000. Monitor included. What would you get? We are kinda of on a verge of new things (like we ever aren't). But what would you get? DDR SDRAM? SDRAM? AMD760? KT133A? ALi MAGiK1? KT266? i815? Intel or AMD? How much RAM? Video card? A lot of questions, but was just curious to what everyone would get.

And don't say something like "I would get Palimino and the AMD760MP, and GF3." Cuz those aren't out yet. I mean RIGHT now, if you had to order tonight.

I would go with shikan's setup (for 5000$ and no more) except for a few things...

Instead of the 75GXP drive which is not very good i would go with three X15 drives, RAID 5 setup and a Mylex RAID card... If i had to use IDE i would choose Maxtor DM60+ drives and no RAID.

He didn't mention which motherboard he was going to use, i would go with the MSI K7T 266-R motherboard (only ide raid version because it does have an AGP PRO slot)...

Oh, i didn't read your post very well... :-(

Ok, the recommendation is the same except for the SCSI setup, go with the Maxtors...

I don't have exact components in mind, however I do know what brands I would buy and where I would buy them from. In my past experiences with computers, I've come to appreciate reliability and ease of use as well as quiet operation. I would probably only buy AMD, even if their processors become slightly slower than future Intel processors. There are many things I do not like about the way Intel uses marketing to fool customers. Also, AMD provides much better overall image and support and their processors are real, not just some high clock speed. I guess this is kinda like a boycott of moral decision, but in the end, isn't that what you have to do when two products provide approximately the same performance? AMD had their 1.33 Ghz processors working for over a month, but didn't release them, simply because their 1.2 already was enough to compete with the Pentium 4. During that month, they worked to further improve operation. I think that AMD puts a lot of more skill into their processors and tries to really make them worth something, not just stupid slogans or 'NetBurst' technology--speed up your internet by 10x! Lame.

Do they have dual DDR 266FSB AMD mobos out yet? If so, I'd get one with 2 1.33Ghz and have nice server :)

I'd go with an AMD760 based 266MHz FSB Athlon.
256MB PC2100 DDR.
Video Card... honestly I'm not sure. If anything, I'd be more likely to wait and see how things turn out.
HDD: I'd probably go with WD's Caviar WD400BB in 40GB, along with a quieter 5400RPM drive as backup.
A decent 12X CDRW.. etc.

I would probably go with AMD760 as well. So you wouldn't have to mess with VIA stuff. DDR Memory, and 60gb of HDD.
