if I'd be the only one becoming a mythical creature I'd probably pick a shapeshifter. If you'd pick something like a dragon you'd be pretty lonely the rest of your life and would get hunted down most likely. As shapeshifter you can pretty much do what you want when you want, you can be a bad guy or a good guy and still hide in plain sight afterwards.

Or some powerful sorceror or so.

It depends on the type of dragon you pick as in the D&D universe the intelligent dragons can shapeshift also and they can become humans or other types of races when they want plus are very strong spellcasters.
