If you change calling plans, do they automatically extend your contract?

I just got a confirmation from Verizon Wireless since I switched to the new America's Choice calling plan and I noticed on my reciept that it says

New Term Beginning:
February 7, 2002 (When I changed my calling plan)

Contract Term:
1 Year

I've had my phone since July of last year. Did they just extend the 1 year contract agreement I signed with them 7 months ago? Anyone know what's going on?

AFAIK, most of them do. It's how you avoid the early termination fee for quitting early on the plan you already had.

Verizon normally does not extend your contract when you change plans. Unfortunately, I think that all of those night and weekend minutes you're getting with the AC plan count as a "promotion," and I think they do extend your contract for adding a promotion

I personally feel somewhat ripped off now that Verizon has discontinued the regional plans, since I often need coverage on the "roads less traveled," but at least they still offer National Single Rate (though it's no longer advertised). The thing is, if I ever switch away from my Midwest Single Rate plan, I can never have it back! Those batards. ;)
