lets say your grandma mama gave you $100 gift certificate to a store you really don't need anything from but could really use the cash instead, could you buy something then return the item and get cash? Would this apply to bestbuy? Or who ever? ???

??

Depends greatly upon the store policies.

I believe Walmart may let you return the first 3 items under a certain dollar amount without a receipt and receive cash (need a Driver's License though), but I'm not sure if that's the exact policy or if they changed it.

Why would they need your driver's license? What if you don't have one?? I was told this at frys and I tried figuring out why they would do this but the guy gave me a confusing answer that didn't really answer the question..

They register the returns to your Driver's License. It's probably a loss prevention tactic.

Ok, but I don't get why that would be...

Say you find a really good deal at one store (say $50 off Walmart's price). If Walmart gives you a cash refund, or even store credit, you more than likely came out ahead either $50 in cash, or could sell the gift card for 80-90% of the store value.

They use the license number to track who returns stuff. I worked at Barnes & Noble and we had a central database that people returning things without a recipt or purchased with a giftcard/store credit.

If you required only a name/address then people could just put down whatever they wanted and change the info every time. By requiring a drivers license it makes it a lot harder for people to abuse the policy.

You can always just sell the gift card on Ebay. I usually get 90-95% of the face value of the card.

huh? I kinda understood what you were saying and then you lost me... are we talking about two different stores?

So store B is protecting its self in the event that someone buys an item on sale at store A and then tries to get money back from store B??? How would that be a loss?

At Best Buy, your receipt will show that you paid for the item with a gift card. Upon return, you'd be given a gift card. You may try talking to a manager, be probably a 50/50 shot at getting cash instead of the GC.

It becomes an issue with Shrink-Swell management (extremely costly), and also losing out on sales.

Wouldn't it not be an issue if the item is brand new, sealed in box?

Universal rule of trading is if they buy back from you payback is the same tender used in the original transaction. Exceptions are made but today they are rare for this reason.

Ok, but I don't get why that would be...

They limit you to a certain number of receiptless returns in a year. They need your driver's license to identify you to keep track of that. You see, there are some unethical people out there who would return an item to a store they didn't buy it from, or even worse, steal an item from a store and then return it for cash or store credit (or return it to a different store for cash or store credit). Limiting you to a certain number of returns per year (3 at Walmar I think) without a receipt cuts down on this.

You say 3, 3 items or 3 times? When they say per year, is that calendar year? So if you 'use up your recieptless returns' on december 26th and then go into the store january 3rd, would it have reset? Or would you have to wait till december 26 the following year?

normal policy is refunded in same form as payment

if u take it back without a receipt then its a gift card for lowest price of object in last 30 days

normally i just find someone i know who likes the store and sell it for 100% of face value.

haven't received a penny less yet

It is usually 3 returns within a 365 day period without a receipt - WalMart will issue you a gift card. After that, time frame, no reciept, no return. Going to a different store will not negate the 365 period; however, you might luck upon some associate that would take pity on your sorry rear.
