My website is getting big for its current shared hosting. But this dell deal is hot
Power Edge

I have never priced out the colocation thing though. Anyone with experience?

I know with our company we make you buy the server through us if you want dedicated server hosting.

How much bandwidth are you using per month. It might happen that rented a server with bandwidth is cheaper than colo.

Thanks Rossman, I thought you would answer in this thread.

Devious, I am running an NHL Site which is coasting at about 8 Gigs a month and averaging 30 users online. My fear is towards the end of the last season my site was packing on 25% more traffic a quarter and it will surely do that again. During the seasons I ran about 15 gigs a month.

From the rates I see at Rossmans link, the server plus U space fee + bandwith is gonna cost $100 plus a month anyway.

DeviousTrap is right just rent a server.

Plus with colo you have to drive out and replace any defective parts. With a rented server, the DC usually has an SLA on how quickly they replace defective hardware.

I currently colo at voxel.net ; depending on how you want your bandwidth (HQ or LQ) it can run you anywhere from $13/mbit to too much/mbit

by the sound of it your site should still be fine on a shared hosting plan. Barring any intensive scripts, you should be fine even with a 100% increase in traffic.

and if you're on a limited plan, switch :)

Sorry but it never hurts to have a reality check.

If you can go after the LOCAL WEB HOSTING market, then go for it. Otherwise don't bother.

Yup, up until you hit around 50 users online you could survive on a good shared hosting account.

Check out HostPC.com, good prices, uptime, and speed, and pretty dang awesome service IMO. You can get to them through help desk, phone for catastrophic breakdowns, and IRC chat. I originally signed up for the Fall Frenzy package on a recommendation by RossMan.

They upgraded me to a newer faster server about 2 months ago...fer free!!

Been very happy with them :)

Hmmm...quick look at their plans show:

1600MB storage/24GB a month bandwidth for $4.99/mo. 30 day guarantee too.
