if you lose the media, but retain the serial, i believe you have the right to download and replace the lost media. if you lose the serial, i don't think it's right to crack the game.

is it really pirating it, if you already bought it? seems that, according to the license agreements, when you purchase software you're not really buying the physical disc, but the right to install and use it for your personal use.
Hypothetically speaking, yes, of course I would obtain a copy to replace my lost or damaged copy. Copyright law might disagree.

For sake of arguement, the game is lost, and so is any receipt or proof of purchase.

Cracking a game is another whole issue.. I *HATE* being required to have the CD in the drive especially when its not using it for content.. I like to tuck my CDs away after they are installed.

if you are retarded enough to lose the cd and serial you probably deserve to put out the money for another copy. now if your cd gets scratched and you have a valid cd key, that's another story.

I voted for pirating being ok in this situation.

But If i lost a physical item such as a Laptop, I dont think it would be ok if I stole one, even though i did intially buy it.

Most software development companies will replace either - especially with a proof of purchase of some kind (receipt, invoice, etc).

You have a right to the code even if you loose the cd and the serial. When you buy software, you're buying a license. That the cd happens to come with it is just for your convenience. The CD itself is just a conveyence for data. Having it doesn't actually mean anything. Companies can buy packages of licences that don't include a CD or certificate from some software companies.

Companies usually want $10 or so to replace lost media. Cheaper to make a replacement copy.

I don't think it would be pirating if you had origianally purchased a copy. You paid for the right to use the software which is what the developers wants.
