It's like software. You don't own the songs, you own a licence to 1 copy of each song. That licence comes (and goes) with the CD.

That gets a bit stickier ... the original question dealt with selling the material, which is clearly re-distributing copyrighed work. But I think fair-use typically allows for backup copies for personal use, although in general, fair use is not clearly defined. I think this would fit that catagory.

I'm ripping my collection now and won't have much use for the cd's. I pretty much knew the answer to my question but I just felt like throwing it on the table anyway.
