Asus has out done themsleves on this one.
I was looking to get a DVD-rom to do ripping for me ( MP3, CloneCD copies and DVD's )
I've tried several different cd-roms for the mp3's and clone images.

On a 52x cd-rom ripping a 600mb cd took just under 4 minutes for cloning to hard disk.
With Asus's 16x DVD drive it took 1:40!!!!

I was "cough" testing DVD copying software.
On a 12x Generic DVD-rom it took 32 minutes to make the image.
On the Asus it took 11 minutes :)

The difference is that the Asus 16x DVD has an ATA100 interface!
It rocks...

I still have my Asus 50x max from '99 and it works great. Very fast.

In my opinion Asus makes the best optical drives. I shat my pants when my Asus 52X did this. I had the Asus 50X for the longest time till their 52 finally came out. I also have thied ATA100 16X DVD drive... Awesome stuff. :D

I still like my Lite-On 16X DVD the best. Lite-On is low price, and their speeds are THE best (except for the Kenwood 72X but noone will argue against thoose kenwoods sucking)..

These are pulled from the CD Speed Homepage.

CD Speed:

LiteOn LTD163 20/48x Atapi Data: 39.0x DAE: 37.2x Combined: 38.1x
Asus CD-S520 22/52x Atapi Data: 39.7x DAE: 32.0x Combined: 35.9x

DVD Speed: (Fastest Drive tested got 12.3)

LiteOn LTD163 GV3R 16x Atapi 11.92x
16X Asus not tested.

I dont think its the ATA100 has anything to do with it. CDRoms and DVDs still dont take full advantage of ATA33... hell Hard Drives barely do. And don't get me wrong I think Asus makes great stuff. I just love my Lite-On especially for its DAE performance... its #1.

This is pulled from Storage Review:

"The drive is remarkably quiet considering its spindle speeds? there are much louder 40X readers out there. What most consumers should be more interested in, however, is the drive's noise levels when playing DVD-Videos. Whereas most DVD-ROMs spin at full spindle speed when playing back movies, the Lite-On spins at minimal speeds (perhaps 1X) and thus is nearly silent during movie playback. Heat levels consequently remain very low during movie playback as well. The drive does warm up a bit after extended use in full-speed reads, though not high enough to warrant any concern. "

Thats another reason I love my Lite-On.... Smart-X rules.... no full speed noisy crap when playing a normal DVD.

I'd get a Lite-on except for one reason: They are loud!

I've put about 5 or 6 of these in peoples boxes and they've all been very loud. Definitley the loudest optical drives I've ever heard. They do work very well though.

How often do you use your dvd-rom drive though? I use mine like 1 or 2 times a week. I'm willing to deal with the noise those few times that I use it

How does the Pioneer DVD-116 16X DVD-ROM drive compare?
And are the LiteOn and Asus drives region-free?
StorageReview lists the LiteOn as the fastest though, but mebbe the Asus is just too new...

Im suprised you say yours was so loud.... Im thinking maybe your last CD Rom was 12X or something.... all 40x+ CD Roms or DVDs are pretty loud.... Lite-On sure isnt all that loud when I compare it to some others. Mine sure isnt all that loud compared to others the same speed. Especially with Smart-X.

As for the person who asked about the Pioneer.... the Pioneer is about .5X slower then Lite-On when it comes to DVDs which isnt all that noticable... about 5% slower. I originally was going to go with the Pioneer.... then I saw Data/DAE results... the Lite-On rated at 39X... the Pioneer 35X... again not a huge difference but noticable. DAE wasnt even a contest... The Lite-On rated at 37X The Pioneer... 16X.... thats a huge difference, the Lite-On is over twice as fast for DAE.

So for some people the Pioneer is a perfectly good option.... but for people like me who rip alot of CDs to MP3 the Lite-On is a much much better choice. I buy alot of CDs and like to leave them in my car so I want the songs on my PC cause I dont want want to keep carrying my CDs around.

Well, after reading this thread, I got me one of them :)
I was buying SDRAM for my brother, and shopping around. They actually have the new ASUS DVD-E616 16X/48X ATA 100 DVD-ROM drives over here, and they weren't too expensive(around US$60) so I just went ahead and bought one to replace my aging and ailing Creative 24X CD-ROM drive...haven't really tested it so far, but I was doing DAE at around 9X, compared to 3-4X on my 24X...not too shabby, but not spectacular either. Noise wise I don't notice a difference between this and my old CD-ROM...

Ya 9X isnt bad, and like I said dont get me wrong I love Asus Products for the most part... but in MusicMatch I get 20-28X DAE rates with the Lite-On... thats alot better IMO.
