In the past, we knew that GTX460-1GB is faster than GTX460-768MB. Now Nvidia is releasing a GTX460SE, which is 1GB, but have fewer cores. So make sure which version of 460 it is before you buy it.

I won't say it is a misnaming as AMD's Radeon 6870 isn't faster than Radeon 5870. I didn't know there was a difference between 680i and 680i SE and got screwed big times because I can't OC my Q6600 on the SE board. I don't want things like this to happen to others.

you don't see a problem with that? SE is also a term that typically means "second edition" not "slower edition". So anyone who did not specifically read about nvidia's misleading would see it and think that GTX460 SE 1GB is better than GTX460 1GB. Assuming they even notice and realize that SE is part of the name nvidia gave it and NOT an addition by the manufacturer (who like adding FTW, OC, SC, etc etc at the end to indicate higher clocked versions)

These things will always happen while they are using numbers for their cards.

Imagine we would go with Cypress XT and Cypress Pro and Barts XT and Barts Pro - there would be no problem Cypress XT>Barts XT>Cypress Pro>Barts Pro.

On the other hand NVIDIA uses numbers in their chips codenames too...

But clearly this product is a GF104 and the GF104s are the GTX460.

Unfortunately this isn't a friendly market for those that buy without researching.

yes, nvidia is not the only one to do it, nor the first to do it. although they have been doing it often.

anyways, this thread served its purpose, if any of us sees a GTX460 SE we will know that SE is not something the manufacturer added to differentiate their various models, but a significantly cut down version of the GPU.

As Hexus pointed out, there is always the chance that it is an OEM only model (like the 300 series). Also, there's a price gap between the GTS 450 and GTX 460 768MB, and as we know from mid-range down GPU companies are physically unable to allow more than a $20 price gap between products.

Unfortunately this isn't a friendly market for those that buy without researching.

I never understood the SE or LE naming convention. In a car, its supposedly extras added that make it more appealing, but I laugh every time I see a 'Limited Edition'. Is that limited as to what it can do ??
In the video card world, its the opposite, LE or SE cards are to be avoided by a true enthusiast. I'll admit to buying them just because they are cheap, and for a casual gamer that I sell to in order to play Plants Vs. Zombies or Call of Duty 2, its fine for what they need.
