you probably voted for........
John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Hmmm.. I guess this is the "real" America Sarah Palin was talking about?

So why is it that states with strongly religious right policies and politicians SEEM to have more of the things they are so against, than the states with far more secular policies?

Either that, or the 'family values' groups have extremely good PR to protect their own.

Because you touch yourself at night?

Maybe those who aren't religious are trying to make up for the rest?

Maybe this is a correlation without causation that someone decided to link to with no real world relevance?

States with an average higher education level have a higher average income level.
Yep. Correlation without causation pretty much explains everything.

Nope, try again.
You could ask questions like "What proportion of people who identify themselves as Christians engage in "X" and what are the rates?

You could replace that with Conservatives (and not all conservatives are Christians, so you really can't interchange the two).

Instead you choose not to see what happens within the states in question and decide it has to do with Christians or Conservatives.

You do realize that many states on the list have higher poverty levels than others and teens who lived in impoverished areas are statistically more likely to become pregnant?

In fact you've decided that you have a stereotype in mind and you look to make a connection without finding out if that is valid.

Typical Republican thinking :p

If you're a high school drop out, have multiple babies by multiple mothers, and have a criminal record you probably voted for Obama/Biden.

Nice troll.

Not even surprised. All the teen/out of wedlock pregnancies on my mothers side of the family have been from the most "devout" religious right families. The forbidden fruit is that much more enticing when you have someone constantly fearing you away from it.

Are you saying that nationally, the religious are more likely to have children out of wedlock?

Stats, stat!

I'm asking a direct question. Are the religious more likely to be single mothers? Can you answer that question or not? Your response wasn't one.

Here is the base problem with Tech's so called analysis.

Let's take teen pregnancies. Blacks have the largest teen pregnancy rates. Many states on the list have a high proportion of blacks. What does that tell us? That these states have a high black population who are impoverished and haven't had a real good time finding work or a good education. That "logically" translates into those states having a lot of republican christians who voted for McCain.

Cause and effect fail.

This is about as meaningful as saying if you're a poor black person you voted for Obama. Two pretty isoteric and vapid statistics to demonize a group of people. I'm not surprised techs latched onto it like a blood-starved leech sucking on a warm nut sack it found itself next to but I am surprised that NY times found relevance in it.

I spend some time on a forum that is so far right leaning it's amazing that they can make left hand turns when they drive. They do precisely the same things. They pull statistics right out of their butts, invent wonderful straw men, practice being critical government when they embraced their own party but excoriate it now that government isn't what they wanted.

In short it's a lot like what I see here, but just directed at the opposite side.

I like to slap them beside the head too :D

Here?s some correlation for you.

Poor states have higher rates of these things and the Republican states are typically poorer than the Democrat states.

teen pregnancies, porn consumption, and divorces are not limited to the poor. Hell the poor probably get their porn for free anyways. I live in a generally wealthy and religious county...plenty of that shit happens way too often around here.

I'm starting to get tired of reading about McCain/Palin and those who voted for them. Personally I think its time to move on...
