If I was Cuban, I'd be more worried about the other 6 people on my innertube causing a leak...

LOL you beat me to this!!! :)

Anyway, he needs defensive players on his team, and he needs to drop Don Nelson. Has that guy ever won anything? He can't get it done, no matter who's on that team.

new coach that can teach defense.

as long as Dallas is 90% offense and 10% defense, they aren't winning a championship.

Fire Nelson for starters. And you don't need 5 scorers on a team (Dirk, Nash, Finley, Jamison, and Walker). You need more quality role players that can play with intensity, play good defense, and get loose balls, rebounds, etc. (like Najera and Bowen). I think Walker is on the last year of his deal, so by getting rid of Raef and his astronomical contract last year should really help them this off season.

No, Walk has another year.... he can be a trade brait but whose going to take him?
Also, they "have" to deal with Nash for a contract. (with already long heavy contract with Dirk and Jamison...)

What are you going to do? (Easy to say spend more money cause its not yours :) )

the mavs have a crapload of talent. plus their rookies, josh howard and marquis daniels, are becoming solid contributers.

they are obviously not going anywhere with their "let's allow 110 points while we try to score 120". they need a new coach who is going to change the way the team plays. as the adage goes, "defense wins championships".

Walker must go. He sucks IMO. THey should have tried to keep Van Exel who could come off the bench and put up 30+pts.:) Then again, WTF would want him?

They need a big man on the inside to provide defense in the paint. All in all they didn't do half bad this season - except for the first game, the other 3 games they lost to the Kings were winnable - their clutch guys were just no where to be found. The small ball tactic just can't hold them forever. I just don't know whose available to provide that to them.

I like Nelson and all, but I agree, a new coach might be needed to get them to the next level. Nelson's approach isn't cutting it. Getting rid of Walker and Fortson might be a good thing. They definitely want to resign Daniels as he has really shown up during the post-season - he's definitely going to be big.

Walker has $14 million coming off the books at the end of next year, there will be plenty of cash strapped teams that will want that. The question is what will they have to offer???

While Walker was good for about the first quarter of the season, he really stunk it up the rest of the way. How did this guy become an All Star?? He can't finish at the bucket, is really turnover prone, and his jumpshot isn't that great. While he does dish out some nifty assists, his negatives way outweigh the positives. I don't see him with the Mavs at the end of next year.

Nelson's a tricky one. I don't see Cuban firing him just yet, but one more underachieving season and another Career Night Defense effort (this year I swear some guy on the opposing team had a season or career high against the Mavs defense each night) and Nellie's out the door!

Keep Nowitzki, Nas, and Finley. THey are the core of this team and shouldn't be broken up. Use Jamison and Walker as trade bait to lure a defensive big man. If they were smart they would figure out some sort of a sign and trade with the Pistons for Rasheed Wallace.

Given all the suggestion people gave, i will say Cuban will keep Nellie. Why? Just because he can do what ppl think is logical... :Q and as well keep the 10 mil.

I don't have a problem with nelson. I think that they need to liquidate a lot of players. They should try to get some good "garbage" players for nash, finley, walker, and maybe jaimeson. Nash is certainly a good player and very popular. I would trade him last. Those rookies that they have in my opinion are better than finley and walker anyway, although i'm not sure if they play the same position.

They should be willing to settle for a couple rebuilding years in order to get a more balanced team. Strictly offense-based teams can make it into the playoffs, but it's really hard for them to win championships. This has been demonstrated quite a bit lately.

There should be a lot of teams willing to get rid of their defensive players, e.g. philly.

have to make a few comments -

Anyone who thinks Cuban is a bad owner is an idiot, period.

5-7 years ago, who wanted to play for the Mavs? Their facilities sucked, their 'perks' for players sucked, fan interest was low, etc etc.

Cuban pampers players like no other owner in the league now - top notch training facilities, perks, huge fan interest, etc, etc - and the Mavs are a contender every year - last year they beat Sac in the playoffs, remember?

Dirk and Finley aren't likely to go anywhere, but beyond that, they could do some dealing.

FYI - teams are going to line up to take Walker - please don't post in NBA threads if you make comments like "who is going to take on a salarly like that?" - TONS of teams are looking for players making big money entering the final year of a contract - this allows them to free up cap space that otherwise wouldn't be due for some time - lets look at an example.

Atlanta had Theo Ratliff and Shareef-A.Raheem tied up in long terms contracts - lets say 9mill a year for each guy, and their contracts weren't expiring for another 3 or 4 years. In the NBA, when you make trades, the net salary (per season) has to be very close to equal - so they trade those 2 guys for Rasheed Wallace, who is making 18Mill a year (exact numbers and terms may be slightly off, but you get the idea). Wallace, in the last year of his contract, will not re-sign with the hawks, so at the end of the upcoming season, they have 18Mill of salary coming off of their salary cap, which, had they not made the deal, would still be tied up with Ratliff and A.Raheem. This is how Denver cleared up so much cap room at the end of last season - why Phoenix dumped all their high-priced guys, etc, etc. There will be quite a few teams looking to free up cap space and the end of the 04/05 season interested in Walker.

Walker, by the way, is a solid player - not a great athlete, but has good skills, and yes, questionable shot selection, but compared to last year, he's much better in that area this year. Great ballhandler for his size as well.

I think the bottom line is this - the Mavs need a center and a power forward who are defensive-oriented players and hopefully one of them can be a scorer in the post, and they need another guard who can shoot from the outside (like Van Excel was for them - they should not have traded him IMO - and I wouldn't be surprised to see them try to re-aquire him this offseason) to come off of the bench. Bradley is more of a 10-15 minute a night guy, and better suited to coming off the bench and not worrying about foul trouble. They don't have a guy they can dump the ball into who can score consistently - everything they do is based on jump-shooting. Walker and/or Jamison are excellent trade bait - Walker for a team looking to clear cap space after next season, and Jamison for a team looking to add some frontcourt offense. Agree with previous post that Theo Ratliff would be an EXCELLENT fit for their team, but I'm not sure they could land him for Walker...would have to be a package deal, or a three-team type of trade.

Ratliff would be too short term to give up guys like nash and jameson. But would be a reasonable trade for walker.

Walker was better this year, but that's not saying much. He has a major attitude problem and is only just now learning how teamwork functions. Getting camby for walker would be a steal, regardless if camby returns to injury problems.

I agree about cuban, he and the owners of the kings are really top notch owners. He does a lot for the fans and really seems to care about whether people enjoy themselves. The same for the malouff (sp?) brothers.
