If you are asian, do you believe to a campus asian church group?

This mostly apply to first generation asian students here in the USA for college...

These foreign students come in, don't know english and do not fit in. They become lonely and vulnerable. They need a sense of community. In comes this asian church group, prosmising a lot of friends. Slowly over time, they become christian.

I guess I'm not really trying to make a point, but just about every FOB I knew in college belong to a church group. I've talked to people and a lot of them were not christians but upon joining the church felt compelled to learn all about it to fit in. You know what happens next...

What does everyone think? I'm seeing this happening to someone I really care about and it is pretty crazy. The group is borderline a cult, overly protective and pressuring her big time and using guilt tactics. But that is for another time...

If you truely care, you should go and then have long talks with your friend about the whole thing.

I'm a FOB from Vietnam and I never joined any of those church, and neither did my brothers or sisters.

What part of the country are we talking about here? Maybe in the midwest where they are isolated. If they went to school in San Francisco, they are probably wondering why there aren't any white people in school and why everyone is asian just like them

I had a bunch of Chinese friends who were in a church "group", but it wasn't much of a cult, as far as I knew.

i'm asian, not christian, and probably never will be christian.

but if i had kids, i'd encourage them to join. i look positively on the sense of community those groups build, a kid in one of those groups is less likely to get into trouble, and i dont see anything bad about them.

There were a few Church groups at UofMich and a lot of people that I knew participated...but they were mostly Asian Americans. Can't say that I recall many international students being part of one, but some probably were.

yeah i think believe = belong.

there definitely is a sense of community in these "asian church groups". i belonged to one as well.

you also have to see that if someone doesn't want to go anymore, you don't have to go, no matter how much guilt someone tries to give you.

maybe your friend keeps going because of the sense of community that really does exist as well as something about these Christians that make your friend want to keep going back...

I don't see a problem with it. Just put yourself in their shoes. I don't agree with your assumption that when and if they decide to take on the Christian faith that they become religious nuts.

Hell, all the Asians I see at my school are very clicky. Whether it's a church group, or an Asian American group, they find a way to stick together.

Most of my friends were in the campus Christian Asian group. I went to a few of their meetings and kinda felt out of place since i'm not religious and have no idea what songs they were singing. There wasn't any pressure there to become a Christian at all. They were good people and fun to hang out with.

that applies to pretty much every segment or group in our society.

I sure as hell haven't observed it at my college.

Freshman and sophmore year, everyone would hang out. Black, white, Jewish, Christians, whatever.

However, the Asians that we tried to hang out with always had "group meetings" they had to attend, and rarely actually hang out with the rest of us. They'd always go to Asian club nights when everyone went out to the bars or hung out to the dorms, and did other similar things.

I'm Asian and born in China. I would never join an Asian church group, or any Asian oriented group for that matter.

It's so funny. During the activities fair at the beginning of the semester, the Taiwainese association approached me to join their group. They just totally ignored the Caucasians walking in front of me, and came up to me. Never mind the fact that I wasn't Taiwainese; they approached me cause I was Asian.

Not really. I'm white but was around hispanic and black people all the time, but the vast majority of asians would stay around only other asians.

this is certainly very prevalent among chinese immigrants here. although most of those who join these churches are not deeply religious at all. they just see it as a way to meet people of similar backgrounds and get support. I haven't seen any cult-like behaviours.

Yea, try to convince him now that God doesn't exist and Jesus will not bring you salvation.

What's wrong with people choosing to become Christian?

That's because white girls are racist against asian men.
