If you and your SO worked ten minutes apart could you get by with one car?

It'd save us some money to use for a wedding, house, paying off student loans, etc. One car payment would be better than two car payments.

Could be done easily. One could actually ride a bike or walk to work from other location if needed. Etc.

Two car payments? How about you sell them both and get two cheap cars and have no payments?

It always cracks me up to hear people complain about needing to save more money, when they're usually wasting ridiculous amounts of it.

I'm not wasting too much. I got my car for $6k under msrp. I wanted the car, but also thought it would help me with my credit. Having no car payment would be nice though. I see your point for sure.

The gf is admant about getting herself a nice car after school. She's tired of her 91 Sunbird.

You could probally get by, but there is no way I could "share" a car with someone. It would be way too inconvienent for both people. I'd get a cheap beater before I shared a car.

That's what we do right now (til I get the VW running agian). I work about 10 minutes drive from home, and so does she. There's always the option of buying a beater outright for less than a downpayment on a second car, but then you've got to insure it--but then you can get liability only on it.

This could work as long as we both work roughly the same schedule. Otherwise one of us might get stuck at work for a couple hours extra waiting for the other to come pick you up.

we used to do that, only take one car to work.. we had 2.. part of the time we had 3! (but no good ones, and no payments) but we always went to work together.. at first we worked about 10 minutes apart on foot, then both of our offices moved and they were a lot further apart but still it wasn't inconvenient for him to drop me off and go on in.. it left me with some sitting around time at the beginning and end of the day but that was much preferable to having to drive in northern virginia rush hour myself!

Try and talk some sense into her. If I had a nickel for every new college grad that went out and bought a new car because they thought they "deserved it" and then saw how it wrecked their finances for years I'd be rich. I know because I did the same thing - and it was the worst financial move of my life.

Yes there is no reason to get a new car at that age... I'm not even that age I can see that. The funny thing is when I see 18-20 year olds buying new cars with the income from their part-time jobs.. these types of people are doomed to a lifetime of financial worry

When I lived at home, my mom used to work in the same building as me, different companies... we would still drive separate cars because our work start/end times were a couple hours off. I wasn't about to sit around a couple hours just to save a little bit of gas... but if it's about buying a whole 'nother car... it's smarter to share.

sure why not. plus, we could have lunch together...in the backseat of the car...if it had a folding table.

i'd do it if i could.

EDIT well to explain: both of our cars are paid off, so right now we have two cars. if for some reason one of our cars exploded, he's the only one that really needs a car, i could in theory take the subway to work.

the only thing i'd be worried about is if someone had to change jobs and you're no longer 10 mins apart from each other.

Yes, you make a very good point, but for me, its worth the convenience. I just can't share a single car with another person. Conflicting Schedules = Headaches, something I try to avoid.

why not try it out for a bit? you can alternate who gets the car at work on what days if someone has a meeting or wants to run errands at lunch time. plus, she already has a car so on days when its just not gonna work out (overtime or meetings) just take two cars. Why not save money on gas?

I highly suggest not buying a new car or buying a car that doesn't require a car payment. I'm not sure how much her car is costing right now in maitence which might be a good reason to buy.

another thing to consider is non work hours. do you both frequently go out different places? what if she wants to do groceries and you need to go to the gym or whatever?

doesn't hurt to at least try it out for a bit anyways.
