If you agree with random searches at the airport you might LOVE this.

I was reading slashdot a few minutes ago and saw this.

"In one of the more bizarre (and intrusive) spinoffs of the Government's 'crackdown on terrorism,' Officials of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration have told Northwest Airlines security specialists that the agency is developing brain-monitoring devices in cooperation with a commercial firm, which it did not identify. Space technology would be adapted to receive and analyze brain-wave and heartbeat patterns, then feed that data into computerized programs 'to detect passengers who potentially might pose a threat,' according to briefing documents obtained by The Washington Times."

Article

Not only do we get unreasonable searches at the airport, now they are going to start monitoring our brain-waves and heartbeat patterns. I am sure the people that support the random searches at the airport will also agree with this BS.

This sounds awesome. I mean if you have no bad intentions, then you have nothing to worry about. it's not like it's an inconvience to you to get your body scanned instead of searched.

true.. i'd rather have my mind read by this machine than get groped by the security officer.

Have you EVER heard of privacy??????

Just because you have nothing to hide do you want the police coming in and searching your house anytime they want?

Lets take away ALL privacy because if you have nothing to hide why do you need privacy?? Great thinking.......

That reminds me of Minority Report. It's funny how we are so going down that slope toward a 1984 society and yet half of our fellow citizens cheer and applaud it.

IIRC, the more vocal respondants in the other thread were not against x-ray scans because they weren't intrusive nor demeening. I doubt said respondants would have a problem with this for the same reasons.

Why do you say those who agree with random searches will love this? Why not say "Those who agree with passing thru x-ray machines will LOVE this"?

It seems like this would raise a red flag when people who are tensed up over flying are scanned. Or teenagers who just saw a hot looking stewardess walk by might trigger a negative response. ;)

What are you doing to stop it?

Riiiiight. I'd rather just have my luggage searched.

It's not a matter of having "bad intentions", it's a matter of personal privacy. If I think the head of security's an idiot, or I don't agree with it, or I think George Bush is an idiot who never should have been elected, who's to say they can't cite me for "suspicious activities"?

This is eerily reminiscient of "1984". However, I think everyone's already agreed on that some time ago.

I'm a libertarian planning on pursuing a Ph.D. in economics. I'll learn something useful to society along the way.

While I wish I were neutral to this, much like the X-Ray, Gaard is right. People usually get stressed out at the airport; little Timmy spilt milk in the Explorer on the way up, or the flight has been delayed by 2 hours, or you couldn't find any decent parking, or you're going to visit the in-laws.;) All this would mean is that the system would mark stressed out people has terrorists; you'd have to be stripped searched for having a bad day.:Q Besides, this at best sounds like a wireless form of a polygraph test. The polygraph is disallowed in courts for a reason: inaccurracy. Innocent people can very well fail the poly, and more importantly, guilty people can control themselves enough to pass it. It theory this system sounds nice, but as things are now, heck no.

LOL That's just funny. I hope they implement it...and remove it a few days later when it makes continuous false IDs for suspicious people.

I think yobarman could use one of these devices to find loose women at parties. ;)

Is this before or after any real terrorists get through?

C'mon, it's not like they're actually reading what you're thinking (Gee, I wonder if I whiped enough). But if you were a guy about to hijack a plane for your allah, then you're no doubt going to be tense.

i agree. i mean, i dont want to have my every move monitored either, but i think this might be helpful to identify *possible* threats, and then they could search those people, rather than searching random people. At least there would be a little more order than there is now

Just imagine during Thanksgiving or year-end holidays, thousands of people being stranded for hours, stressed and frustrated. The brain wave machine will go banana, which will fuel more frustration to the passengers.
