I would buy a ~5K civic/accord as a commuter. My regular car averages a tad over 20 and that doesn't warrant replacement in my mind.

I will still drive my Cougar (gets about 27 MPG highway, I live about 25 miles away from my university... all but 3 miles being highway).

I might consider getting a car capable of E85 and getting someone to hook me up with some white lightning:evil:

Well I currently average 30mpg. I plan on keeping this car until it dies. If gas gets to $5 and my income hasn't adjust to the point where buying gas at that price would be like buying it now and I had to get a car, I would do like i did this time and get a cheap fuel effecient vehicle again or buy something used.

OLD Ford Aspire, Festiva or Geo Metro. My old Aspire got like 50mpg on the highway when I took it on a trip from Dayton,OH to Cedar Rapids, IA.

I would buy a second commuter car which I'm going to probably have to do anyways since I will soon have a 40 mile trip to work each way on the interstate. The WRX gets about 26 on the highway but I'm gonna need something over 30 or my balls will start to ache.

In retrospect I wish I had kept my Integra for exactly this purpose instead of selling it. If knew then what I know now.....

Hmm... my old GS-R never got over 30 mpg. The gearing was pretty short and it spun over 4k at 80 mph cruising. City mileage wasn't that great either, because it was damned torqueless down low.

I'd buy a new bike (as in bicycle) and commute most days and keep my current car at home unless its raining or freezing.

Really should anyway, for my health.

LOL, we may all be looking at them.

Hehe yeah, you can fix it with a screwdriver and bubble gum, and it gets a jillion miles per gallon ;)

Waiting for that new Camaro with the 6.2L 450hp LS3.
$5 gas will be the perfect time to buy one. High gas price -> very few people buy a car like that -> you own a rare car that is likely to become a collectible later. Plus if gas goes to $5, politicians are going to try to clamp down on cars like that, so you may own a last of its kind genuine American muscle car in its prime form.
Look at the money those muscle cars from the 70s are bringing in now.
Oh yeah, I bike to work, so if I have to spend more on gas to have fun on weekends, big deal. All the more incentive to keep miles on it low and preserve value. Plus just driving a car like that is blinging when gas is at $5. No need to put dubs on it.

"If/when gas went/goes to $5/gallon..."

If you want to see the future ... look to the present. Gas prices in Europe (Germany for example) is ... get this ... is currently $7.17 USD per gallon.

Look at what the Europeans are driving ... at $7 a gallon ... NOW.
