If/when a 2m cache A64 is comming out

Maybe when/IF amd hits 3.0 and can't go higher. Then they'll probably release a 2 MB cache version to up the performance a little bit more.

It wouldnt do sh*t for the K8. Even the gains for a cache hungry chip such as prescott going from 1 to 2 meg cache was minimal in terms of performance. Waste of die space.

Things we will most likley see is obvoudly DDR2 memory controllers, perhaps independent memory controllers, increased HTT link speed, and ofcourse quad cores...

The 2MB cache on Prescotts doesn't really help performance because while the cache was increased, it got slower, the same was true for 512KB-1MB on the P4. The same isn't so true for Dothan vs. Banias.

However I agree, the 1MB A64/X2s have little advantage over their 512KB counterparts, and thus 2MB would be a waste, the A64/X2s simply don't need that much cache thanks to the integrated memory controller. I'd much rather see a more robust or updated memory controller before extra cache.

Why do people like the term independant memory controllers/channels here so much? Seriously it wouldn't help.
It would just limit the bandwidth that each core could use.

Unlike Intel, AMD isn't stupid.

I doubt they will bother with 2 MB cache parts anytime soon, since it adds a higher manufacturing cost without much actual benefit.

Well the reason I asked, is because they have pritty much blead the 90nm to death and at 3ghz, the FX might become a little too hot. I see the 65nm giving maybe another 200/400mhz but where is the point when dual cores will be dominant by then. DDR2 might be the next logical step for AMD because DDR2 will become much more mainstream (I hope its at 800mhz, not 6xxmhz) thanks to the Intel. But think about 2x cache might help more than the jump from 512k-1m performance wise.

I was reading this article at work. It had a roadmap in it for intel and amd. For it show, when amd bring out their ddr2 cpu, they were going to make a fx chip with 2mb l2 cache.
