we're not completely a capitalist society, we have elements of socialism. But mainly the kidney business is because of ethics. Politicians don't want there to be a price on human organs, as they are afraid putting a price on human body parts would create a market for them making you as a person, a comodity to be bought and sold. While some may argue this is already happening, politicians will tell you legalizing the sale of kidneys and such would lead to a rampant degree of this. This COULD translate into people killing for body parts.

There are prisons full of body parts that can be harvested.
It would fix the overcrowding problem too.

Though the other posters are correct that the reason is not a True Capitalist country, this indeed is the primary reason behind not allowing it.

Such a system would open up so much potential abuse it is simply better just to ban it outright.

This one is easy:

Kidney's (other organs) that go for sale online (before being taken down) get bidded up to millions of dollars by people out there who are desperate for themselves or their loved ones. So if it was legal, I am pretty sure we would have a lot more killers in this world for that type of money. I also remember reading that this type of disgusting "chop shop" behavoir happens in some places in China.

EDIT: Any other reasons, while they may be true, don't hold a candle to the magnitude of this reason.

Also, I'm sure it would start some kind of organ harvesting trade.

Is that not what goes on when you need some "life saving" operation/medicine that isn't covered by your insurance or by your own assets?

Medical Professional: You need X and we'll do it for $, or insurance, or oral sex.
You: I don't have $ or insurance and I don't give good oral sex.
Medical Preofessional: Here's a card for the funeral home down the street. I hear they're really good.

I dunno, I think I should be able to sell myself. Whores should be able to do what they do too, but we have laws against that also. "It's my body, I can do what I want!" doesn't fly very far in a courtroom.

Sounds fine and dandy until your neighbour decides to Sell you without you knowing it.

Because it would create another market for murder. You'd be able to sell a cadaver for millions of dollars.

Think about the implications.
