I've heard from people in my bowling league that if you got laid off, it's better to file for unemployment in MA because they pay more, even if you dont work/live in that state

(MA pays $628 to $942 per WEEK, depending on your eligibility)

i always thought it was the state where you worked that you file.
i asked my acquaintances why would MA pay if you dont live or work there. somel of them said they dont know. it just is. others said MA back charges your state for the amount.

so is it possible to file for unemployment in MA even if you never lived or worked there? if so, why would MA allow such a thing?

That's probably before tax, so about $550 after tax, which is still quite a heck of a lot. More than 50% more than NY even!!

hmmm interesting....

I worked remotely for a company in MA and they laid me off. You think I could re-file for unemployment in that state so I can make more?

not sure about Massachusetts but in California unemployment is not taxed by the state and there is a federal exemption for unemployment pay.

WAT? 942x52=49k a year, thats chump change for ATOT

That said, I made more that the low end while a retail manager with no degree. Thats only 32k.

It's 1/2 your weekly earnings from the previous 1/4 year of work. With a max of $629 per week for 30 weeks is $18k and change. You are allowed an additional allowance of $25 per child. So, unless you have 13 kids you'll never get $942 per week.

Benefits are taxable at the Federal level. Just the first $2K is exempt per Obama

Many states allow you to have 10% withheld to assist in the tax bite.

And as another has said; the benefits are based on the state you file in. you have to have been employed within that state.
