If this isn't good enough for Doom3, I don't know what is...

Alright, I'm building a rig for a friend and he's wants to go all out for Doom3. Here's what I got:

$299.00 SilverStone Silver Temjin SST-TJ03 Case
$152.00 ASUS A8V Deluxe
$369.00 Mushkin 1GB (512 x 2) PC3200 "222 Special"
$869.00 Athlon64 FX-53 socket 939 retail
$183.00 74GB WD Raptor
$499.00 BFG GeForce 6800 GT
$88.49 Audigy 2 ZS
--------------------------------------------------------------
2,459.49 Total

He's transferring over a 16x DVD Pioneer slot loading drive, Sony DVD burner, and an Antec 480W PSU.

What do ya'll think? If this doesn't play Doom3 and HL2 liquid smooth, then I don't know what will.

* I would have thrown in the 6800 Ultra but I can't find where it's available NOW.

i'd wait on the video card til the 6800 ultra comes out. doom 3 wont be out til august 13th or so, so that's a good enuff time to wait for the ultra to hit newegg.

"Internationally, the game will take a few more days to make it to the store shelves. The UK will probably get it first, on or about August 6th. Everywhere else will probably be Friday, August 13th (que Twilight Zone Theme) or close to that date, with just a few exceptions (e.g. Russia and Poland). This isn't
because we don't have love for you folks outside the U.S., but the localization and manufacturing process
takes a bit longer outside the U.S. where we will have JVC run 24/7 to get the units built. I guess the
European manufacturers prefer to give their employees nights and weekends off. Go figure!"

$499 for a GT!!???!!! I hope those arent american prices. Even at the normal online places (like newegg) you can get the card for $400. ALso, I wouldnt spend extra on going w/ the ultra. I got a GT and it overclocks like a champ to ultra speeds.

I thought he also mentioned that stores would be able to purchase it on the 1st, and in the US, we would be able to purchase it on the 5th?

I currently have an ATI RAdeon x800 Pro, i'm hoping it will be able to handle doom at highest settings smoothly. Regardless, by end of October i hope to purchase teh x800 XT.

Also, 184 dollars is an unbelivable amount on a 74 gig hard drive. A benchmark on anandtech showed that it provided no real proformance gain over other harddrives. I would pick up a 80gig seagate if i were you.

JackB, that rig is garbage. People on this forum sure like paying out-the-a$$ for components. Why not just go to your local Best Buy and pay retail; it's about as bad. Hopefully you're friend is the type that enjoys throwing his money away. My suggestion:

1) No Silverstone case is worth $300. Not even close. Get a CoolerMaster WaveMaster or equivalent for around $150. Savings: $150

2) OCZ EL Platinum. Savings: $109

3) PNY 6800GT. Savings: $159.33

4) AMD Athlon 64 3800+ S939. Savings: $160

TOTAL SAVINGS: $578.33

NEW TOTAL: $1881.16

Put my config next to your config and bench it; the difference in any benchmark will be within the margin of error.

I have never seen a computer at Best Buy that could handle anything hardly above CS: CZ with their integrated graphics or FX 5200 video cards...

Like this one?. My local Best Buy also has an in-store configurator for AlienWare computers. Not that I'd buy anything at retail, but if you were so inclined.

Riiiight.

The CoolerMaster WaveMaster case is my second favorite case. The Silverstone is my TOP choice. I'm VERY picky about looks, and the Silverstone looks the best out of ANY case I've seen. AWESOME case! It's all about style dude. ;)

That's not bad memory but the Mushkin memory I listed is better. Tighter timings and can overclock like a mofo with little if any voltage increase.

3) PNY 6800GT. Savings: $159.33
Good suggestion. I just got most of the components at Newegg and $499 was their price for the only 6800 GT I saw on their site. I'll go with the PNY, thanks.

The FX53 is the better performer (not by much, but still better). It's also more flexible when it comes to overclocking since it's multiplier unlocked. $160 is not that huge of a difference. If it was like $300 more, I'd definitely go with the 3800+.

Any other questions, comments?

* Any yes, those are US prices. I actually got the prices from Newegg (Except for the case. Newegg didn't carry it).

some people have way too much money to blow on a PC ! LOL

I think my 9800Pro/Barton 2500+ will run it decently.

Lol the Raptor 2 rips apart 7200 rpm harddrives. Maybe in game benches it doesn't improve anything but in loading times it's unstoppable. Even the 16 meg cache harddrives only match the raptor 2 in some and still loses in other benches.

You need registered RAM for an FX processor. I would ditch that setup and sane money by going either 754 or 939. 939 only offers a small performance increase over 754.
