No not a crime, actually I'm not sure if it is or not. Could be construed as internet harassment under that new law.
People walking by is not the same as 10 million random people (potentially psycho) on the internet.

I just know that if you posted my license plate and registration sticker (that contains the VIN, or used to), I would be upset.

No... people (potentially psycho, murderers, child molesters, hitmen, mafia members) walking by would be able to steal the car, not just look at pictures of it on the internet.

You can easily get all of the registered owners information with a license plate number from the DMV and a little prodding.
