If they invented something like this, I bet a lot of people would lose weight

gopunk

Lifer
just a little device that monitors things in your body... like tells you exactly how much of everything you have, what your daily rec. value is, how much more you need, etc. how many calories you have taken in so far, how many you have burned, etc. i guess that might be near impossible now, but damn that would be so useful. because i think the reason why a lot of people don't do what they should is because they don't see immediate results... i guess that is kind of stupid, but it' snot like we're ever going to change that.

Yeah, I can see so many 300lb lardasses taking thier $50 to go buy your health monitor thing instead of buying a Big Mac and Extreme Naked Volleyball for thier playstation.

Problem with that would be bowel control.

Super Laxative! 🙂

I once lost 30 lbs in a few months. When people ask me how I did it and what my secret was I said "I burned more calories than I consumed".

more people would probably do that if they saw some immediate consequence to their actions

i don't quite understand why you have so much hostlity towards this idea or those people. it is not like it is making you any fatter... nor am i asking you to pay for these devices...

Gopunk - exactly what results are you talking about? They're not gonig to lose weight any faster, and I don't think people are particularly motivated by a few numbers on an LCD.

I think his point is that if people knew exactly how many calories they burn in a day and exactly how many then consume at a glance, they could limit themselves to a small deficit every day and lose weight. Even with careful monitoring of diet and such, there's still a fudge factor with this kinda stuff currently.

ie- people are always bitching "I hardly eat anything and I can't lose weight!" when they are actually taking in far more calories than they realize.

yes that's exactly what i'm saying... right now it's like a guessing game almost... if it were actually accurate, i think that'd motivate a lot more people... they'd see a number and go "okay, i'll work out until i get down to this lower number".

if you need an example, think of those carnival games where you shoot a water gun and a balloon inflates, first one to pop wins. do you think that game would work if there were no balloon? no, because people wouldn't have a clue as to whether or not they were winning.

Actually, I think this is a fantastic idea. This is just like an energy conservation 'experiment' going on in Ontario right now - here's a link to an article about the project. Basically for $600, instead of the spinning-dials hydro meter of old you get an extensive digital display on your meter that tells you the rates you're consuming energy at, and how much prepaid $$$ for energy you have left in your account.

Key concept: "If you can't monitor something, you can't manage it."

Great idea, maybe someday the implementation will be possible - whoever pulls that off is going to be a billionaire.

It's basically an electronic version of weight watcher's or jenny craig point based systems where different meals or foods are worth different points twords your daily food consumption.

For people that have the discipline to stick to the system and be honest about it, it does work.

WOW...that is quite the concept, the sad part is some people still don't get that part of it. Instead of trying fad diets just follow the above. Also, I think that idea would be sweet but I think the people who bought it would probably be people who are fairly in shape already or who are interested in their bodies, whereas the people who would most need a device like this would not even look twice at it.

You're probably right. So many people have given up. When you unashamedly commandeer a motorized cart to haul your 400lb ass to the back of Walmart to pick up more cases of soda and beer and ice cream, you've given up.

That auto calorie counter would be nice though, I've wished for something like that before when I'm on a diet.

What you really need is something to tell your hypothalamus that you're stuffed to the gills. People will lose weight when that happens. At least the ones who can afford it.

err, lipid blockers have been on the market for some time now. They basically coat your digestive system and don't allow fats to be absorbed normally.. though I can't imagine the havoc it would wreak on your BMs like you said.

Isn't that essentially what Olestra (WOW! Chips) is?

Uh....yeah. To put it mildly.

We once treated a dog (I was a vet tech years ago) whose intestine wouldn't properly absorb digested food, meaning 90% of what she ate came out the other end. You may lose weight this way, but you'd be filling up a Depends every hour. No thanks.

well it's not exactly what you're talking about but there are palm pilot programs that will tell you how many calories you've taken in so far when you input what food you've eaten. then all you need is a test, which already exists, that tells you how many calories you're required to take in to maintain your current state(i think the program has a guideline for what your caloric intake should be as well). after that all you have to do is make sure you take in fewer calories than you need and you'll lose weight.

a friend of mine is using the program and it apparently has a huge database of different types of foods and their caloric values. he's been consistently losing weight for the past 3 months. it also informs him how many calories he burns depending on workouts.

pm me if you want the name of the program and i'll track it down though i think you can easily find it on handango.
