If there were no deductions for charity, would you still give?

Would you?

Obviously this is geared towards folks itemizing their returns, but if the gov't declared that charitable gifts are no longer deductible, would you still maintain or reduce your gifts?

I've always thought that charitable contributions shouldn't be deductible.
If you want to give...give, just don't expect to deduct it from your taxable income. (IMO, that makes it a government subsidy.)

For me, the tax angle just doesn't factor into charitable giving. Either the babe asking for donations is hot or she isn't.

Pretty much this. With the tax write off, bullshit like PETA become partially government funded.

I don't really like deductible charitable contributions, but whatever.

Random aside, I donated some of my own money to charity for kind of the first time today. St. Jude sent me a cute card with some small notepads and some customized return address labels; I felt too guilty ignoring it. Even though the addresses on the labels are cut off so they're useless to me. Not itemizing so ain't doing anything for me though.

I agree. That being said, I give so I'm damn well going to deduct it. No point in not taking free money.

Meh, I haven't paid taxes in like 4 years (yes legally, my income is substantially tax-free during that time so I don't even need to claim deductions yet I still donate a little. Not a ton, but a little.

I don't donate to charity. I pay my taxes and show support for public projects

(which ultimately benefits myself because I work for a company that does government contracts)

One of my life's goal is to open a nonprofit shelter and rehab center in a third world country where people will be fed, trained and given a second chance in life; when I can do that, I know I'd have made it.

When you give, you shouldn't expect anything back from it.

I do not give to deductible charities. For me, charity begins at home and I provide what I can to the poor members of my family.

When my income becomes large enough that I will pay a significant amount of taxes, then I will donate to the charity of my choosing to ensure my tax money goes where I want it to go.

For me, the deduction is a bonus. I would maintain the same level of giving even if it wasn't deductible.

I dont do it for the taxes. I do it cuz theres certain things I care about and I wanna help.
BUT, I do get pissed off when my name is given out. I donated to the Virginia Police Association and the next day I had about 6 calls from other charities. When the envelope for the Police fund came in the mail I tore it up and threw away the sticker.

I believe in helping people, I do not believe in being an ATM. And invasion of privacy should be a crime.

Yeah. I enjoy getting those return address labels from the american heart society each year. I'm certainly not going to waste them 😛

I send the one with a big heart on it to my mortgage company each month.

I used to regularly donate to the police and firemen and what you describe happened to me as well. I was harassed by other charities and the police and firemen, so I finally stopped donating and now never hear anything.

What makes me most angry is several times during the conversation I specifically told the guy to not give my number or address to anyone. He said fine he would note that in my database.
