If there was no moon would there be tides? Would they be smaller? Would they even exist?

Just a question that came to me...

The sun creates tides, known as Solar Tides, the moon creates tides known as Lunar Tides. So yes, there would still be tides, although I don't think they'd be as large.

Yes there won't be tides. Many sea animals that depend on tides would die out, but I don't think life will cease to exist :)

Speaking of tides,

You should ALWAYS wash your clothes in Tide.

Why?

It's too cold outTide.

Discovery Channel had a whole show about what would happen with no moon. It was a neat show and basically we would be screwed.

Did you know that the moon is moving away from us at the rate of a few feet a year?

But I'm allergic. Makes me all itchy. That was a wicked couple of months before I figured out what caused it.

I really don't think its moving that fast away from Earth.. but you are correct, it is a measurable distance.

Yup. It stabilizes the tilt of the earth's axis. Without it, there'd be such dramatic climate swings that we'd probably die out.

No, that is simply wrong. I'm not saying life would cease to exist, but it wouldn't be on earth and if there was life it sure as hell wouldn't be here as more than some aneorobic bacteria living deep in some magma crater.

Without the moon we wouldn't just not have tides, we'd be just another rock with no atmosphere in space.

The earth and moon have had a very special relationship since they were just young massess of turbulent molten rock.

Go read a book

edit: I guess I'm trying to understand your question... do you mean if there was no moon starting out in the formation of the solar system or do you mean if we suddendly looked up into the sky tonight and the moon was conspicuously absent?
Either way stuff would be very very differerent.
