..would the vast majority of Americans give a rats behind about what is going on in Israel right now?

I doubt it. Our government would be continuing the peace brokering that it has always been involved in, but it wouldn't be a big deal to the average American. Life would be going on as usual.

In light of what happened on 9/11, though, Americans are feeling vulnerable and realize that what goes on in the Middle East has relevance in their own back yards.

In other words, Americans are concerned about the Middle East only because they are worried about their own a$ses.

The US never brokered peace. It perpetually and unilaterally supported Israel.

I would care-- Ive been following the situationt there *very* closely since about 3 months before the start of the major violence in 2000. However, I agree that a lot of people wouldnt care as much if 9-11 hadnt happened. Futhermore, even if people cared, im sure they would look at it from a different point of view. I am almost sure that 9-11 has hurt the Arab cause more than 100 suicide bombings in a cafe ever could.
