If the US power grid stopped supplying energy how long would we live?

A total and complete loss of power, assuming the means of restoring it are not available. Could the US function for any extended amount of time? No gas pumps working, no electric lights once the above ground gas supplies run out and all generators stop. If no one can drive, or travel extended distances at all, what happens? There is a complete break down of all communications networks. Obviously there would be looting and riots, and as realization of the situation sinks in, then what? Do we revert to primitive tribes? Would there be civil wars? The water/sewage system would no longer work, would there be massive epidemics? How much of the US population would die off? What geographical areas would be least affected by this?

IMHO the US population would be decimated by wars over resources and the eventual plagues and epidemics. I dont know how large of a population could be supported on just farming and hunting/gathering. Maybe the population would go down to 1 million or less? I would imagine rural areas in the midwest would be least affected, as a lot of farmers can become self sustaining. The question is could they withstand the millions of people flooding out of cities looking for food and clean water?

Discuss, or not as you see fit 🙂 This isnt really a parody, as much as it is another theoretical situation.

I'd live forevAr

step one would probably be build a wood fired steamengine.. generate me some electricity. I would own teh intarweb.

step 2 would be grow a lot of corn or similar, and make ethanol out of it, and modify a gas engine to run on ethyl. I'd probably drink some of it too.

edit: the bulk of the US population would die from stupidity and laziness.

best place would to be would be out in the country, a big city will smell like major ass without sewage or waste removal.

Power Grids would physically seperated, and hten individual reactors would be turned back on.

Nuclear power...coal....solar..wind....

We don't just have "electricity"..it has a source, and we have ways of manipulation..

oh...and NYC would be fvcked😀

I am just saying if for some reason all major sources of power were permanently disabled, i.e. no power plants.

Sh!t would seriously hit the fan.

Most likely, the national government would deploy the Army to the cities. In the event that Europe still had power, we might be saved. If this were a global thing, and all the power plants were actually GONE, we would be in very very seriously trouble.

i would go out and find as many hamsters as possible... throw them in a giant wheel and give them doses of Xenadrine

hooaaahhhh

Hamster Power!!!!

I would move to central america......they seem to be fine dealing without PP's😀

My mom used to talk about how her brother, my uncle, was an expert at repairing the family's chevy.

BY "chevy" I mean chevy engine, and the corn Mill it ran😀

I think chaos would erupt but eventually... after a long time, things would calm down and people would find a way to live without it.

At first I thought, I'd just kill myself. Then I realized that the only reason I use electronics now is because it's so boring where I live, but without electricity people would be playing sports 24/7 and doing other activities, and that's what I want to do. This sounds like a good idea...

time to destroy the power grid 🙂

Cities would be tough, but people living where there is any space would be fine.

Plenty of guns and fireplaces out where I live so we'd be fine.
