if the parking meter is broken...

Yeah, but you still take your chance getting a ticket. It would be up to YOU to prove that it was broken...NOT easy to do, because the city might repair/replace it, and you'd have no way to prove it...

At my school, if there is a broken meter, you do not have to pay to park there.

Moreover, when the parking office hears that there is a broken meter, they will send someone to fix it. After fixing it, they will add the maximum time allowed to the meter.

So, sometimes you have to be careful.. Don't assume that if there is a broken 1hr meter, you can park there all day, because it is very possible that the parking guy could come around and fix the meter a minute after you leave your car, then give you a ticket an hour later.

they can also chalk your time for the maximum amount of time allowed by the meter, then come back after that time.

i saw a meter maid drive past 3 cars that had a blinking 00:00 on the meter. Bastard.

I've never parked at a broken meter in my life (never that lucky) although I know where at least 3 - 4 of them are around the city.

Broken meters here get a "No Parking" cover stuffed over them very quickly. I guess the meter maids know that someone is going to want the space badly enough to pay the $3.00 fee.

actually, this happened to me today. I told myself yay....free parking for me. after I parked my car, there was a car two cars in front of me was leaving. then I told myself better be safe than be sorry.

hehe i've been taking advantage of the broken meters, they are actually hollow here (missing the led thingy inside the "container" I guess). However, there is a Sentra that often gets to the meter before I do 🙁, then I have to spend a buck to park for class.

One time they were fixing meters, and the meter lady did indeed add time to meter after it was fixed and someone had already parked there.
