I thought we won't be seeing it live, because it starts at 8/8/08 at 8pm in China, so thats 8/8/08 at 8AM EST in the US. They just show it at 8pm because of "prime time' TV advertisers/sponsors.
because seeing the Opening ceremony live is completely necessary
AFAIK, all that happens on 8/8/08 is the opening ceremony, any of the actual major events the USA is participating in will be shown live on at least one of the NBC affiliates (if not NBC itself) and then probably shown again in edited form in primetime for those who couldn't watch it live, want to see it again, or would rather watch it than find out the scores directly...
Actually, alot of the bigger events this year were scheduled in the AM in China, so it will definitely be primetime, and live, for the U.S. The swimming finals I know are happening for sure live in the U.S. with no delay.
