If the federal government were run more like here in Mississippi, the whole country would be a lot better off.

http://www.sunherald.com/2012/03/08/3805876/romney-says-washington-could-learn.html

This is a thing that Mitt Romney actually said. This should disqualify him from EVER holding office. Do we really want to start emulating a state where bigotry is rampant, the population is the poorest (or one of the poorest) states in the nation, education is looked down upon, they try to subjugate women's rights, etc. etc.? Also, 'missing teeth' seems to be a common theme down there.

Edit: Forgot, climate change and evolution would probably be legislated as 'hoaxes' by the federal government. You could probably generate a 100 page list of why the federal government emulating Mississippi in any way is a bad idea.

edit, from someone who lives in the state:

If you didn't read the article, it's spot on about the problem with the Mississippi state government. Mississippi is in a tailspin. Companies don't want to bring businesses to Mississippi because of the uneducated, untrained work force. The state legislature is doing everything in its power to keep Mississippi stupid and poor. Education funding is cut every year because we have to balance the budget. They can't balance the budget because there aren't enough businesses in the state to pay taxes to keep the government running. Businesses don't come to Mississippi because the people here are fucking stupid from a lack of quality education. It's an endless cycle.

I work for a manufacturer in Tupelo and I was recently talking with a co-worker about some open maintenance positions here at the plant. He's been interviewing candidates almost non-stop for a month and hasn't hired anybody because he can't find anyone qualified to do the job. The educational system here is fucked beyond repair and it's costing people potential jobs to help feed their families.

But no, the legislature has found it important to focus on keeping women barefoot and pregnant and making sure Jose isn't here illegally.

So bottom line, this is probably Mitt's worst pandering job yet.

I'm sure he really meant all those negative things Mississippi has to offer when he said that. Wow. Maybe he should have said California. Hell pick any state, they all have pros and cons. Troll.

Then he should have clarified which particular aspects of Mississippi he wants the federal government to emulate. It sounds pretty bad as is, given that it is one of the 2-3 poorest states in America.

Oh, that's cute, someone's white knighting Mississippi. Yeah sure, they all have pros and cons. The thing is, Mississippi has way more cons than pros.

Depending on the point of view, same goes for every single state.

What does he want then? It's for Romney to say if he doesn't want to invite these kinds of inferences, particularly with a state as generally bad off as Mississippi.

Dunno, I agree its for him to say but to start saying he wants all the negatives is incredibly stupid. I agree he could have stated this better but please don't try to make excuses for intentional asshattery, we all know you are better than that.

I personally find it refreshing that a member of the GOP has the stones to come out and say on the record that he thinks what's best for the country is keeping the masses poor and stupid.

I hate it when people say public education can make people smarter. Intelligence is determined by genetics. If they're dumb, it's not because they aren't forced to throw more money into education than they actually do.

Intelligence is different from knowledge. Intelligent people know this.

Really? You think he is going to visit Mississippi and tell them that the government should act like another state and not the one he is visiting? Its called pandering to a crowd..and in Mississippi its probably not hard :p

No one is saying that Romney said that he wants uneducated people, high unemployment, etc. But if you read the article, it is highly ironic that he should bring up poor education in the context of praising Mississippi's government. Granted, a rock star says that every city he plays is the best, but it's still amusing when a political candidate does it.

That may be true, but intelligence is more important than knowledge. My knowledge is high, but my intelligence is probably low so I'm not going to be successful.
You only need to know one profitable procedure well to be successful, assuming the acquisition of cheddar is what you mean by successful.

Good point. What I meant by "successful" was making more money than the average person does. "Failure", IMO, means making less than the average person does.

Maybe for states that are close to each other, but, for example, if you tried comparing my home state of Massachusetts to Mississippi, i would laugh at you nonstop.

Study: Online, liberals far less tolerant than normal people :hmm:
Who would have thought?

Your own article:
PASCAGOULA -- Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney came to the Coast for the first time Thursday and attacked President Barack Obama for not creating jobs or working on the deficit. He said Washington could learn from the Magnolia State on those issues.

Romney was joined by Gov. Phil Bryant, who endorsed the former Massachusetts governor at a campaign stop at the Port of Pascagoula. He was met by about 200 supporters there, where he talked about creating jobs, cutting taxes, reducing the deficit and eliminating government waste. He said Obama hasn’t addressed those issues in his four years in office, but he believes Mississippi has.

“If the federal government were run more like the government here in Mississippi, the whole country would be a lot better off,” Romney said.
So he went to a conservative place and basically said the country should learn to be more conservative. GOLLY GEE, Romney is so evil... and conservative!

This is the Leftist mantra of how Romney is now a conservative extremest. After praising him for the past couple years it's now time to paint him into a corner against Obama. Let's forget the things he did as governor, this moderate is now going to turn the country into the 'evil' that is Mississippi!

Does that study count my "intolerence" to conservative intolerance (racism, sexism, homophibia, xenophobia, and general bigotry) as ACTUAL 'intolerance'? If so, guilty as charged, see sig.

Don't forget that MA has Romneycare and Mississippi doesn't.

We have that 'fancy pants book learning' and GOOD jobs and Mississippi doesn't. Mississippi is also one of those redstates that suck tax money out of blue states like Mass.

As no one seems to note in a dated thread, ole Mitt lost both the Mississippi and Alabama GOP primaries for all his pandering. Oh Magoo, Romney is doing a hell of a snow job.

There has to be something missing in Mississippi?

So Romney was sucking up to Gov. Phil Bryant, color me surprised. Too bad it didn't work with the Mississippi voters and he lost.
