how have they managed to spell my name wrong on everything they've ever sent me?

my SS card has my name spelt correctly as Francis. my ATM card, checks, statements etc. all have me down as FRANCES.

me thinks they wanted my SSN just for the sake of having it.

they don't look up your name from your SIN/SSN, they just use it to associate you with a number.

Off Topic, but Why? Isn't a SS number for SOCIAL SECURITY? Why does the bank care about my social security stuff?

 It's the easiest way to use a number to uniquely identify an individual. It guarantees no duplicates, and it's easy for the customer to remember.

My bank used to make me use my SSN to login to their online banking. Then they decided to make me pick my own number (had to be a number, no letters). So what number did I choose? My SSN.

It does not guarantee duplicates, as far as the bank is concerned, but does go a long way is generally unique and "rememberable". Your point is still valid.

Do they reuse SSNs after people die? I suppose they'd have to eventually unless they add another digit (that was pretty short-sighted of them...).

Or are you referring to people who use fake social security cards?

Your SSN is one of the easiest ways to organize you.
Why shouldn't your bank have it?

If I had your full name, I could go to my local SS admin office here and get a lot of information on you.

Why should they? The bank is not the gov't, and a SS# is a gov't number.
