Use a different connector? (another 12v molex off the same line)

Or do you mean the actual SOCKET in the CDR or HD? If <---that, methinks you gots da troubles.

BAD deal. IIRC you can run that card w/ one molex plug tho'

Damn, that sucks! I am always afraid of this happening on my 9800. Whenever I plug/unplug the molex, I "clamp the socket down" with my thumb and forefinger...kind of like "anchor it down to the PCB" before putting strain on it.

Can you take a pic of the top and bottom of the socket? (both sides of the PCB) so we can see if it's salvageable or not?

I just grabbed a pic online, but thats a 6800. Mine is a 5950+ and unfortunatly, it only has 1 4pin molex.

Is there a certain powercord that should go into the 4pin molex? I just randomly picked a free one.

EDIT: I don't have a digital camera, ill try to find a pic online tho.

Nope. Any old 12-volt Molex will do...it only fits in the socket one way though, just like a CDR or a HD. Got pics?

No, no, no! I know what THE card looks like. I want to see a pic of YOUR CARD with the BUSTED MOLEX....dummy. ;)

It may be semi-physically detached from the card, but still electrically connected somehow...pics will show. :)

oh nonono, it looks brand new. There is absolutely nothing wrong w/ it physically. I just get this error when i boot up that says

"The NVIDIA System sentinel is reporting that the nvidiea-powered graphics card is not receiving sufficient power.

To protect your hardware from potential damage or causing a potential system lockup, the graphics processor has lowered its performance to a level that allows continued safe operations."

I wouldn't mind if htis error brought its performance down a little bit. But I can't even run farcry :\

I tried putting in a 400W PSU, but that didn't do it. All I can think is that the molex slot is broken and its not getting power thru the 4pin molex.

heh?

Remove and reseat the card a few times. When it clicks down into the AGP slot, "wiggle" it around in there a little to ensure all the contacts are making contact. Also, be sure that the 12V molex is actually plugged in and the pins are making contact. Those little molex sockets are tight when new and possibly the connector isn't fully seated.

What Powersupplies are you using? Is it a good one like an Antec/Fortron/Sparkle/Enermax or is it a "Joe Brand Big Oompah PS" from the corner store?

Well right now im using a 300W ALLIEO, give or take a few letters. I tried the card on another comp where it has a 400 W ANTEC and it does the same problem.

Dead card. RMA time. Allied PSs are crap, but if you tried it w/a 400-watt Antec, odds are the card is a dud. Sorry.

Yes. Return Merchandise Authorization (number). You contact the place you bought it from and they issue you an RMA nubmer. That number authorizes you to return the card to them for replacement/refund of your money. You need an RMA number to return it. Unless you bought it at a store like BestBuy or Fry's or someplace similiar.

hrmm ok heres the tricky part

the only reason i have this card is because my roomate got a 6800 and he did mention there was something wrong w/ the 5950 but never specified what. He got sick of messing w/ the 5950, so he just bought a 6800 and gave me the 5950.

The shady part is that he put a new heatsink on there so I guess it 'voids' the warranty. Is it hard to replace the original heatsink on there, if i do it will the warranty work? Is there some sort of sticker that gets ripped off when you put a third party heatsink on it?

OK, school's in session. Pull up a chair.

I hope your roommate GAVE you that card and you didn't PAY a dime for it, b/c it's dead. As a doornail.

There's only one reason people put aftermarket heatsinks on a videocard. Overclocking. Your friend overclocked the snot out of the card and killed it. "He didn't mention" what the problem was b/c would you have wanted it if you knew it was dead? No, of course not!

It is entirely possible to put the stock HS back on. But if the store bothers to check, they will know right away that the stock HS has been removed and put back.

Go w/your conscience there...and prepare to go [dumb] Uh, I dunno...[/dumb] if you get caught. ;)

The card is dead. Either buy a new one or try to return it. Your choice.
