I'm about as liberal as they come in many respects, and I say yes, in large part because the majority of the time, there's absolutely no way to know whether or not the person poses a threat. If they're willing to steal a car, who knows what type of person they are, or what else they might be willing to do. Thus, if it comes to my life/the life of my friends and family vs. the life of a thief, I'm going to choose the former.

By the way, I'm wavering on how valuable YOUR life is based solely on the use of the word "peeps" at the beginning of this thread.

I would never shoot someone over it, of course, but if I see you out stealing my car that would probably be a deciding factor in my reaction.

My new scenario was:

OK, so the guy walks up to you, you are in the car at traffic lights, you aren't paying attention the guy opens your door (it is unlocked) grabs you pulls you out of the car, drops you on the road gets in the car, and attempts to drive away, This is the situation.

What then?

That's understandable, I tried something new... Maybe I wont use it again.

Ladies and gentlemen. This is a troll post. Please take it as an example so that in future you know what to look for when accusing me of trolling.

ahh.. now we understand...

to the British.. "troll" = truth.

So when people accuse you of trolling... they're accusing you of telling the truth... so you instantly deny it.

 good to know.

we won't accuse you of telling the truth anymore.

Whoozyer...
Yes. If they attack me out of the blue, for no apparent reason and without provocation, yes.

What would you think? "Oh he's just hitting me. He'll stop soon. I just KNOW it!"

You seriously can't be this thick.

Wow. I'm glad I don't live in your world of paranoia, life must be terrifying.

Stop cherry picking my quotes.

And answer my question!

Here it is again.

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response - Wikipedia

He's right though. You were trolling him in his troll post.

I should equate all Americans to tridents posts.

Well if they are trying to steal your car they have a reason...?

Answer... My... Question... , Troll.

I didn't provoke him into stealing my car. I didn't give him reason to steal my car. And I didn't do either to cause him to attack me.

Since all the threads in Off-topic are pretty much intended to provoke others in one way or another we're all trolls and should just enjoy each other's company.

If everyone thought the same it'd be extremely boring. Arguing is a way to exercise the brain and attempt to understand (even if you don't agree) another's point of view.

A fair point but I don't post with the intent of provoking emotional responses, I'm looking for reasoned debates.

I tend to be overly fair, but once you stretched the car jacker concept to a naked, unarmed guy you might as well have moved under a bridge, sir. :whiste:

I don't understand why extending it to such an absurd length means I was trying to provoke emotion?

if it were up to me, I'd shoot people for taking too long at the soda fountain. Its best that decisions like that are not left up to me.

This reminds me of that episode of "Titus" where everybody had guns. Papa Titus shoots some woman for cutting in front of him in line at the grocery store.

As for the OP's flawed hypothetical: Am I in the car? If I am you can be very assured that my weapon will be discharged into the scumbag's face.

If I am not in the car, and I see it happen, I'll yell at them. If they come at me, they're dead, if they run, they live. If they can get in the car and get it moving before I get to them, the police and the insurance companies get to earn their keep.

As for why your hypothetical is flawed, there is no "knowing" a criminal does or doesn't have a weapon; somebody doing bad is assumed to be armed, therefore deadly force is warranted to protect me and mine (property or persons).

And you're going to let him?

Neckbeard probably would.

A thief is just like you but down on his luck.

Incorrect. A person just doesn't go from being a productive member or society to a carjacking overnight.

When I'm down on my luck (I was unemployed from November 09 - June 10) I damn sure don't try to rob other people.

Sorry, it became convoluted, I thought the whole "He has no gun, and is no threat to you" was quite cut and dry, but people didn't like it.

That's because It's FUCKING WRONG!

Here's the revised hypothetical, I'll add it to the OP.

LOL, you're pathetic if you let someone do that to you in real life.

You honestly wouldn't do a fucking thing if someone was trying to carjack you?

Maybe you shouldn't go out in public.

Wow. I'm glad I don't live in your world of paranoia, life must be terrifying.

what do you mean paranoia? He described a situation where someone ambushes him and continuously beats on him. that is not paranoia. that meets no definition of paranoia. you see--the threat is actually happening.

do you honestly not value your life? you would chose not to defend yourself, simply hoping that they will stop trying to kill you?

please please tell me that all Brits aren't such huge criminal-empowering pussies as you present yourself to be.

Well if they are trying to steal your car they have a reason...?

their reasons:

they don't have a car and they want one. possibly to joy ride, wreck, and abandon.

they want to sell it to a chop shop.

they need a getaway to commit some other crime.

these are pretty much the reasons.

again--why oh why do you side with the criminal in this?

what the holy fuck is wrong with you?
