About two steps back I'd say. Course it depends on the specific situation.
2 steps back minimum.
that's what 90% of people do on the escalators coming out of the subway every morning at least.

You guys worry about the dumbest shit...
I thought you made fun of other for posting about their social awkwardness on here?
Depends on how fast they're walking. If they go too slow then I just pass them, no matter the size of the staircase. It could be a staircase where each step is the size of a foot. I would pass.
Basically, if I catch up or have too close of a distance... then I pass no matter their current speed. Similar to how I drive.
So none of you guys worry that someone will think that you're staring at their butt? :hmm:
This is my standard operating procedure out in the open, but imagine this: I am walking up multiple sets of staircases in a parking garage and a hawt woman in tight pants is in front of me, walking very slowly talking on a cell phone. I could pass her potentially, yes, but what if someone else is coming down the other side? Then I would be forced to move to the right and be right up against her, and all parties involved would be aware of it. It would look intentional.
that is one of many things i have never remotely came close to thinking about. i do what i'm comfortable with, unwritten social rules be damned.
