If someone is too fat to get out of bed . . .

and feed them self, and you are the person feeding them, would lowering their calories gradually so that they would lose weight be wrong?

Say you lower it under their usage by 200 calories a day. Make sure they have all the essential nutrients.

🙂🙂

A lot of these huge fat tubs are on relatively low calorie diets as it is. The problem is they don't move much.

Many have thyroid underactivity too (hypothyroidism) that lead to a very dysfunctional low metabolism. Ironically, people who take synthetic hormones to compensate often gain weight as a result.

As for the answer to the OP's question, I would not be an enabler.

I would do it. If I have the responsibility to keep them alive, I would also feel that responsibility extended to corrective measures that would increase their future lifespan.

I wash myself with a rag on a stick

Like this? 😀

That was one of the motivating factors that keeps me from getting too big is that I would prefer to be able to care for myself. I got to about 350 at one point and was starting not to be flexible enough to do so. At ~300 I manage well enough.

I'd just starve them. Isn't fat supposed to be a reserve in case you run out of food? If they have that much fat, they can probably survive for weeks without a bite to eat.

I am a fat guy, but really fat people like that deserve to have their jaws closed shut for a few months. I don't want to hear that thyroid crap, I am fat because I eat like a pig...and so are they.

in india, fat is a sign of wealth. a US passport also guarantees that fatty indians can marry smoking hot skinny girls

Relatively low compaired to what, a polar bear? They don't think they eat that much because they are never full but in reality they eat in one sitting more then a normal person would eat in a week, or more.

If they lose weight to the point of getting out of bed, then they will be able to get out of bed to get more food until they can't get out of bed again. It's like one of Newtons laws of gravity. 😛

I've seen some of these fatties taking in fewer than 2,000 calories a day. They don't move so they burn very few calories a day. For a normal, active person they would probably lose weight with under 2k a day, but not if you stay in bed or near bed 24/7.

So only give them 1000 calories a day.

Every single time I've seen a show about one of these people, the person who is taking care of them seems to be seriously fucked up in the head. I think these enablers are consciously or unconsciously keeping the person fat so they have someone to take care of, to make their pathetic life feel meaningful.

I'm sorry, but if you can't get out of bed to feed yourself, then the person who is feeding you is guilty of abuse by continuing to feed you too much.

Absolutely, give them fewer calories. My point was that a lot of these people aren't eating huge amounts of calories which is typically assumed. Some of them are, some aren't. If you're 750 lbs and have maintained that weight for 5-10 years and you stay in the house 95% of the time you aren't eating 5k calories a day, you're probably eating 2k or less. At some point they probably were eating 5k a day to get to their weight level though.

1000 a day for 500lbs person is too little, they're going to starve to death. 2500 is more like it.

idk, I altered my diet without significantly adjusting activity levels and have lost 230 pounds.

like with any addict, there's usually someone in the background supporting them who's as addicted to the addict as the addict is to food. you can't get to be so fat that you can't get out of bed without help.

Do you spend 23 hours a day in bed? Do you walk fewer than 50 feet a day?

These fat blobs get to a point where it becomes more difficult for them to lose weight than a "normal" person because their activity level is so low.

I'm not saying they have an excuse, I put the blame squarely on them.

Bullshit.

The whole point of having layers of fat is for the body to use it as a source of energy during times when there is a lack of food.

As long as the person has the proper vitamins and and minerals, they would be fine on 1000 calories a day.

But the real point here is that they need to be consuming fewer calories than they currently are, no matter what that number is. It pisses me off when these enablers are on these sob story tv shows, crying about how they don't know what to do and they are afraid the person is going to die. Gee, I don't know, maybe you should stop bringing them pizza and candy bars, you fucking idiot.

There is no logical reason that anyone should be too fat to get out of bed unless someone else is keeping them fat. It really should be a self-correcting situation. You can't get out of bed, you can't eat, you lose weight, then you can get out of bed.

isn't the whole resting metabolic rate thing the amount of calories a person burns just sitting there breathing and doing nothing else?

I'd imagine any amount of calories lower than that number is going to lead to weight loss.
