If some aliens came from outer space and told us that we had to invent a toothpaste container that never ran out...

... otherwise they would destroy our planet.

Could we do it? Could our scientists around the world pool together to develop some kind of chemical toothpaste that regenerated itself somehow? Or expanded from a concentrated substance so tiny that it wouldn't run out in a million years?

Nope. People would be too busy killing each other and firebombing any building, including research buildings.

It'd have to be something organic that could grow itself.

...or just be in the UK where they don't use toothpaste. Thus if it's never used, it never runs out.

What if they only quietly contacted a government organization, so no one knew about it? Like Men in black.

Okay, putting my pessimistic attitude of people aside... I don't really think it can be done in such a timeframe, if at all. :(

I know the secret, but because I'm a sadistic evil bastard I'd rather not share it and let the aliens destroy earth.

OHNOES the aliens want to corner the toothpaste market!! hella weak, you got low expectations of the aliens on this side of the galaxy. we already got a planet full of idiots who never run out of bad ideas, you'd think that would count for something.

:D  So wrong.

You could have something organic taht when exposed to air would grow rapidly. Make a derivative of E. Coli that kills the bacteria that feeds on plague and bone by producing antiseptic. (They have made this, but haven't marketted it because it could spread by kissing, which wouldn't be profitable  ). If there is a stipulation that it has to be exposed to air, then it is possible, because it could be an organic process, but even then it wouldn't be self-sustaining indefinitely.

Good lord! Could you imagine the destructive capabilites of such technology? You could fill the entire universe with toothpaste and no one, and i mean ABSOLUTELY NO ONE, could stop you. They could go around from world to world conquering it with their neverending tube of toothpaste. You damn straight I rather die before giving up such technology.
