If Quake were current gen

Heh, those Quake speed runs are absolutely a thing of beauty. Doom via a local BBS and Quake at LAN parties was the high point of my gaming life.

I can't view it at work, but is it one of those unfunny, self-serving 'the mindless shooters I used to play when I was 15, are a million times better than the mindless shooters today's 15 year olds are playing'...?

It is, but not as bad as I thought it would be. It does actually have a point and is good for a chuckle. The boss fight made me laugh anyway, especially when the achievement popped up.

Although I don't really share the hatred towards current gen games...

It'd be really awesome if we got some more remastered PC games. Doom 3 is a good start, but I'd rather see it happen to something like the first two quake and unreal games. All the great lithtech games too, like NOLF and SHOGO. I think they'd still play pretty well nowadays.

I didn't find Doom 3 to be all that different from the older FPS, granted I'm a bit younger and only got seriously into Quake II, Unreal Tournament etc.. But as I recall, I disliked Doom 3 because it felt so antiquated. I get the feeling we are remembering these games as better than they actually were 😉

Fear 3, for example, was a fairly OK FPS but I think I would enjoy it a lot more than replaying Quake II.

Current gen FPS game on PC I hate would be Halo, and heavily scripted single player games like CoD. Otherwise Fear, Crysis, Far Cry, Metro, Stalker lots of descent current gen FPS.

It is the DRM that pisses me off to be honest. I just bought Max Payne 3 and the crappy always online DRM they use sucks. I had go sign up for an account, and part of the terms of service was that they could track your internet usage and sell it to third parties!

i like current gen games. i play some old ones sometimes but i don't see whats so great about them.

1. go from one boxy room into another boxy room.
2. kill everything you see
3. press large square button to open door in some other room that makes no real logical sense. then collect things and go to ...hey, another boxy room with red floor (lets pretend its lava)
4. now bounce around and find ugly, crazy large key. push large button to exit.
5. the end. congrabulations on completing a game that went nowhere. (i spelled congratulations wrong to mock old games that had misspellings for those that remember.)

in all seriousness, i find both old and new fun to play in their own ways. some old ones are hard to get into though.

Also Blood 1 and 2, the original Duke Nukem 3D, and of course Vampire TM Bloodlines though it's an RPG.

Sigh, instead it's Spec Ops Battlefront Universal Soldier 11.

bloodlines? Redemption was waayy better than Bloodlines. the hotel scene was cool though, the rest was a static, borefest. lets go to mannequin and get a quest. quest done, lets revisit mannequin and get another quest. its like taking quest objectives from a fortune machine

Wait, wut? Bloodlines was awesome, if you could get past the bugs.

A proper, polished, remastering Bloodlines with a fixed ending, not the uber rushed extended fight scene, would be epic.

dang they still want $9.99 for Quake 1 on steam?
$19.99 for quake 3 arena? i'd rather buy Unreal 3 for that price.

I've seen the Quake one before, and just recently came across the Doom one.

Most people that aren't terribly familiar with Quake won't ever fully appreciate just what is going on in Quake done quick.

It'd be equally silly the other way around. I know in a lot of ways they don't make them like they used to...but it is so easy to forget some of the more horrible things from that era.

I know, it's almost painful to watch the guy deliberately slow himself down and pause frequently for the sake of the audience. Some id fans use 120hz monitors and crank the game up as high as 180fps just to get that extra edge on the competition.

I sure as hell don't miss the bunny hopping era, good riddance to that crap.

That being said, I'm not a fan of the current shooters either. The only FPS I play is TF2, and that's more for the class based team work and Pixar like art.

Quake 3 was so damn good. I remember being okay at it before I got a voodoo 3 GPU, and then I was just dominant because the game was actually responsive. Of course, it was all jumping around with a rocket or rail gun, but it was still amazingly addictive.
