Lets say you are having a conversation between another forum member via PM. You use language and talk about things that would get you banned in forums:
- racist language
- getting illegal drugs
- violence against people
- how to scam/rip off people
- child pornography
- committing crimes (planning, boasting, providing advice)
- etc. etc.

You then receive a warning from a mod telling you, you are not allowed to discuss such things and are warned you will be banned if you continue.

Now, you and this other person are willingly and consensually engaged in this "type" of conversation. You are NOT PM'ing some random person and begin discussing these topics. You are of like minds.

1) Is this wrong if mods begin looking at what goes on in Private Messages?

2) If you do get "modded" for inappropriate PM conversations, would you still continue using these forums?

I don't operate under the assumption that I have any "rights" on this private forum. The only thing really keeping the mods in line is the desire of AT as a whole to have an active community, and banning people for poor reasons is counterproductive to that goal. Furthermore, there is no reason to think that PMs don't have to conform to the general forum guidelines. I would not have such a conversation anywhere on this site.

There is even an official announcement; would you then avoid said forum entirely?

why would i? there are countless appropriate topics to discuss with appropriate language.

This is the angle; you are part of a forum community where one of the things I listed is something you do and enjoy.

Topics were created, then locked and people banned/suspended. You realize there are people like you and you know who they are. You wish to continue discussing the things that would get your banned/suspended and modded.

So, you begin sending PMs to people like you on these forums and you continue your conversations.

Meaning, you KNOW it's not allowed in the public space of these forums, why take it to the private space of these forums? Or, better yet - go find forums where people like you enjoy these things and are allowed to freely discuss them.

Now, that does not mean stop posting entirely in the forums that don't allow these topics. But, go discuss these things someplace else.

I would probably leave said forum if that happened to me. Its a PM "PRIVATE message". Meaning its for that persons eyes only. Mods should only patrol the public areas for misuse. If they dont want PMs then dont have them on your site.

But i never discuss anything inappropriate online so this would not affect me. Its more the principle of it for me.

that wasn't your question. you asked whether or not you would stop frequenting the forum in which your topic was verboten not whether or not you would frequent an additional forum for your forbidden topics.

i would definitely exercise my freedom of posting in another forum if i desired to discuss topics not allowed on my original forum. however, i would still also continue to discuss appropriate topics on my original forum.
