If people hated Linux. . .

. . .as much as they do Microsoft, would Linux be just as attacked as Windows? Think about it, if the people who are out there creating viri like nimda and code red were trying to exploit Windows instead would Linux be just as bad mouthed as Windows? I guess the question that really needs to be asked is: Is Windows attacked because it has lot's of known weaknesses or does Windows have lot's of known weaknesses because it's attacked.

Ok, it's almost 5am and I'm kinda tired so I know this might not make sense, but hopefully somebody will understand what I'm trying to say.

actually, i doubt they would.

there are too many people who fear linux, but not hate it in that sense.
most people fear the unknown.

plus, with linux being so open source, a lot of security holes get fixed relatively fast, from my understandings of the OS.

Windows just has that bad habit of releasing their fixes at a cost *coughwinxpcough*, not to name any specifics. ;D
If M$ spent as much time on fixing security on their OS as they did trying to crack down on piracy, maybe more versions of Windows would be decent.

I'm lucky I have very good friends, really, as one of them found out about my plight with WinME (i managed to contract 300+ instances of pe_cabanas and one of pe_cih :\) and said "Do You want Win2000?"

First reaction: "Legal?"
"Yup."
" 😱! "
"*he laughed at me* I got an extra copy you can have."
from there, I received an unopened, authentic Win2000 cd in the mail. I only use WinME when i need to use some dos based programs now. 🙂

i know this is getting long, but i'm close to done with my rambling, I think. 🙂

anyway.
Most people tend to hate an unfinished product if it's buggy.
If it's stable, they end up liking it.

oddly interesting fact:
most M$ beta products are more stable than their finished counterparts.
why do i say this?
Simple. Because MS has not had the chance to pump it full of bloated useless features yet.

For that reason, I will not:
Use WinXP (i don't need a skinned OS. >:\)
Use IE6 (all this time and you STILL have broken PNG support AND a lot of useless features. :\)

Done Rambling now. 🙂

Is Windows attacked because it has lot's of known weaknesses or does Windows have lot's of known weaknesses because it's attacked.

The weaknesses are there because MS can't program and people spend a lot of time looking for them for multiple reasons. Some people just dislike MS, some people use their software in mission critical places (I feel sorry for them) and are merely evaluating a particular aspect of it's security and some people accidentally stumble upon things. If you write software for other people to use you should be ready to have it thoroughly inspected by other people, IIS is probably MS' best example of how not to do thing.

Linux has had worms and viruses written for it, but it's much harder to exploit because of inherent security in Linux's design and because most Linux users are much more conscience of security issues.

I disagree... I believe that MS has some of the best programmers working for them. Of course one could argue that the Open Source projects do as well. I am not saying one is better than the other, I believe they are on par.

The products that MS ships could all be top notch if the corporate suits would give the programmers time to debug their work. Unfortunately, release deadlines are a major contributor to software that is buggy and full of security holes.

I believe that if Linux had a release schedule it had to follow - the quality of the sofware/os would suffer

When developing a product, programmers need to run though preliminary(sp?) steps before any code is actually written. One of these steps - the one that most programmers hate is when you get input from the business side. They want a ton of features - don't care how bloated the software gets and they tell you to do it. Since they are your boss, you can only state your opinion and push it so far without losing your job... MS is a very good company to work for (benefits, flexible hours, etc..)

These are what I think MS' biggest problems are...

Am sorry but it's very hard to make a virus for Linux. First of all the biggest problem would be that you would need to make it so the user CHMOD's everything he/she downloads and have them give it execute permmisson and second it would only effect the user account and not ROOT. Since most Linux users are smart enough not to use ROOT as there primary means of using their Linux boxes. A Linux virus would not get very far. Here's a good anology for what I am saying.

Windoze user: Click's download - "Thank you for downloading and installing the KILLALL virus. Your machine will now self-destruct in 10 seconds.
Have a nice day. 🙂 "

Linux user: Click's download - "Hey please chmod me!!!" 😀 "C'mon, s'important stupid!!" :| "Hey am talking to you!!!" :| "What !!!" :Q " Hey don't look at my code !!" :Q "Noooooooo!!"

Linux user: Click's delete - v1rU$rU$.sh = deleted

You're free to disagree, but if MS' programmers can't even check buffers before copying them in things like IIS and the GDI I rate them as "bad" whether they're rushed or not.
