If only Star Wars had done more in the 1980's

ROTJ was 1983 and TPM was 1997. 14 year gap.

If Lucas had allowed other people to take control of the franchise and make feature movies in those 14 years he'd probably have another billion dollar at least in income.

Nowadays, I get the sense that people are kinda meh about the new Star Wars. Like, it's nice and a little interesting, but in the meantime there was also Firefly and BSG and now there's also the Marvel and DC universe on film, LOTR came out, and so on.

Novels can't do what full feature films could have done.
There were two Ewok movies, because Lucas was Doing It For The Kids.™ Unfortunately they were all doing too much cocaine to make a third.

Lucas also started LucasArts, which made some killer video games, and he spent a lot of time working on ILM. It's not like he was sitting on his thumbs for 15 years not making any money; he just decided he didn't want to be making Star Wars movies for the rest of his life.

TPM was 1999, not 1997. ;)
Pointless now, since the EU novels are declared non-canon by Disney.

The Thrawn trilogy would have fit perfectly in the early/mid 90's and wouldn't even screw up the new ones with a couple changes. Outside of those though I don't think the EU novels would have worked for new movies. Hell, Disney even made Thrawn canon again.
