I've been thinking. If ATI can sell a X1800XT 512MB for $339 now and a 256MB for $289, wouldn't it make sense that nVidia could make a killing selling 7900GTs with 512MB RAM for say $339-$349 given their overclockability?

would be nice to see a 7900gt with 512mb, but i think it's too soon to release one just yet, and wouldn't that take sales away from the 7900gtx...maybe later down the line we'll see a 7900gt with 512mb, kinda like what Gainward did with the 7800gt Gainward BLISS

Sapphire 256MB X1800XT -- $289
Sapphire 512MB X1800XT -- $339

They're somewhat more expensive at other sites right now. Sorry, CA folks, you'll have to live with paying tax. God forbid.

I would assume companies are not making 512MB 7900GTs pretty much in order not to cannibalize 7900GTX sales. The 7900GT is basically a lower-cost version of the 7800GTX 256MB, and the 7900GTX is a lower-cost version of the 7800GTX 512MB (that you can actually buy).

My guess is they would make a bigger killing if they sold out at the higher price :)

btw Nvidia makes the same amount of money on the cards if it is sold for 1 buck or 1000. It is the OEMs who use their GPU that seem the difference profit.
