If North Korea fires another test missile

North Korea has been on a roll recently with missile launches. According, to some speculation they may fire another one.

Typically the trajectory of a rocket is over Japan. Now, with all the modern anti-missile weaponry that Japan, US and South Korea have accumulated, why don't they just shoot it the fvck down?

What's North Korea going to do? Issue a note of protest?

Probably blow up South Korea, which is what everyone's trying to avoid.

As far as I know, nothing is stopping anyone from shooting down the missile once it's over sovereign land of any nation other than N.K. In International Waters, they might just kind of let it go, let N.K. feel a little cocky and move on. However, as far as I'm concerned, it basically becomes an open invitation for target practice once the missile is in the air. But with that said, U.S. and allies might not want to go showing off our missile defense ability yet, not until its of grave concern, like if the trajectory is pointing to it landing on some country's land. Not to mention the fact that every missile fired to shoot down a missile in flight would be an unnecessary cost if its not a real threat.

edit: the other issue is what exactly N.K. would do in protest. They are a bunch of testy fools who aren't exactly logical in their approach with the rest of the world, and nobody quite wants to find out what exactly N.K. would do in retaliation for "upsetting" them.

Those South Koreans are silly. If they are afraid of North Korea shelling Seoul, then why don't they simply move Seoul a few miles down? I should be president of South Korea.

Royally fuck up Seoul?

Glass parking lots can't fuck anything up.

Just fire an intercept missile as soon as our satellites detect missile launch

That would be a victory for North Korea, the Japanese anti-missile is worth more than the North Korean missile.

That missile will be going much too fast by the time it get over Japan to be intercepted by anything known to man (except another ICBM). By an order of magnitude.

Japan and the US are blowing smoke when they talk of intercepting it.

The reentry vehicle is also going way to fast to intercept at the target by Patriots.

An ICBM class rocket must be destroyed within a few seconds of launch. That is what Reagan's Star Wars program was all about.

Some reasons including Kim Jong <whoever the hell it is now> having a hissy fit, or the inability of anybody to actually take it out, or don't want to give attention to the biggest attention whore in the world, or simply as mentioned don't want to let people know what abilities in anti-missile exist.

I just read about this missile they have and it's mostly a piece of crap. It has a small payload, reentry problems, and the chances of hitting anything besides ocean just aren't high, even if it tried. Like taking a musket to a modern day rifle competition. Yes, you may hit the bullseye, but chances are you'll be laughed out of the contest.

I love being an AT armchair general

I like to see your plans on moving close to 25 million people and not to mention all the infrastructure, buildings, and private property. It is impossible to relocate Seoul its like trying to move Los Angeles or New York.

Critical mass of uranium is <100 kilos....aka small payload...that's what this is all about.

If we can't intercept these then be sure we are developing the tech to do so.

The best anti-missile defense shields in the world have only a 50% success rate under control conditions. That means the system knows where the missile is and the weather is pristine, visibility is perfect. Even then, you can only shoot it down 50% of the time.

That's why the best defense was overwhelming, assured destruction. If it wasn't for MAD, the Cold War would have ended in nuclear disaster.

Dang, and here i thought PieIsAwesome had a really good shot at the presidency.

🙁

This is actually good news for US, a big assertive proof to Russia of why Europe needs a missile defense. North Korea is doing us a favor by this launch. 🙂

Nk needs to show it's customers that it can actauuly build long range missles that work.

The last couple of tests have failed - that does not inspire confidence by those that are willing to spend millions of dollars per tube.

Actually not true. If you can calculate the speed and trajectory of the enemy missile you simple have to shoot an intercept device into the path of said missile to take it down. You do not have to match the speed of the missile.

Now, we have problems making our missiles do that reliably, but that is another conversation on application.

http://www.answers.com/topic/railgun

As you can see the dictionary has it as "rail gun" not "railgun"
