If my heatsink is a little scratched is it necessary to lap it?

well it is for use with a tb yes you should remove the feet(rubberpads) on the heatsink but if it is for a p3 then no.

actually there are articles stating that lapping can actually increase temps.
Overclockers had some a while back.

Lapping is sanding the bottom of the heatsink to a smooth shine right? If its scratched at the contact point then Lap it. If the bottom of your heatsink shines then it reflets heat right back to the CPU( i.e its bad) If you lap it just to make it flat and not shine then it will have better contact with the CPU and that is a good thing.
