If max. environment temp of operating Maxtor disk is 55C, what's the max. allowed temp for the harddisk itself?!!..

Hi,

We have 2 "Maxtor DiamondMax 60GB 7200rpm" drives that according to HDD Health are already 55°C at startup, which I believe is the max. operating temp! Which problems do I risk with those harddisks with such high temperatures?! Could they get damaged, data loss, etc..

Strange enough we have the PC already for a year and have not had any problems so far with it yet, also not with the harddisks. It's just that I measured the temps of the harddisk today and HDD Health said the harddisks are at 55°C (and perhaps even going beyond this) and I want to know if this is something to worry about, like could I get problems in the future or something with the harddisks running at such high temperatures?!

How much above 55°C can you go and what are the real risks with this?! Also, which are the normal (healthy) temperatures for these Maxtor harddisks?!

Thanks in advance for all good feedback!

My two Maxtors are running at 21 and 23 degrees C right now. I believe heat pretty much kills hard drives. I'd back them up right now.

What software are you using to determine the temps? What are your case/processor temps? Have decent air flow in the case?

Try putting the hard drives in open air but still connected, and check temperatures. What are room temperatures? Do you have any fans in the computer? If so, how many, where, doing what? (Intake, outtake, side of case, back, front, etc.)

What are motherboard/cpu temps? What else do you have in the case?

55c is the very upper end for the normal operating conditions for a hard drive. the drives should be fine, but it would be best to get airflow (doesnt really matter how much, just as long as you have some) to the drives.

Are they in the oven or microwave? If they are remove them and try again. Either that or the hd is broken.

The Maxtor specs say that the operating temp for harddisks is 5C to 55C (non-operating being even much higher). Since I don't know any harddisk that can run at a temperature as low as 5C, doesn't that mean that these temps are the environmental/case temps the disk is allowed to run in, and not the temp of the harddisk itself?!!

Therefore myy question: Anybody knows what the max. allowed temp is for a Maxtor harddisk itself to operate at, cause they don't seem to mention that?! I would really like to know that, cause that's what program like HDD Health measure if I am right but Maxtor only give environmental temps, but what about the allowed temp of the actual harddisk itself?!!

Anybody know this?!!

same goes for the upper end of the scale - if a hard drive can run normally in 55c evironment, dont you think that the innards will be warmer than that?

Do you mean then that the temp of a Maxtor harddisk itself MAY be higher then 55C, am I understanding this correct?! My question then is, how high, cause it's the actual harddisk temp that programs like HDD Health measure I think, so therefore it would be usefull to know the max. allowed temp for the actual harddisk, not its environment temp. Anybody has any idea for Maxtor drives?!
