:D Indeed. Rational debate vs black-and-white Colbert.
I wonder if Colbert would run as himself, or as his character?

Like we've never had actors/celebrities in office before. Reagan. Schwarzenegger. Ventura. And how many people thought that Reagan was the greatest thing since Jesus and toasted sliced bread?

Even though this will hurt my argument I have to say it:

I grew up in Minnesota and Jesse Ventura was my mayor as well as govenor.
He did alright at the first job and horribly at the second job.

I lived in CA for 3 years and as much as I didnt like it, things were even worse for having Arnie in office. He really hasnt fixed much of anything, and passes pointless laws like banning .50 BMG's.

As mentioned before Reagan was pretty good overall, but he set out to be a politican LONG before he hit the oval office.

wow.... close to 50/50 so far

You have to consider the age of the posters. They get their "news" from these entertainment shows. And since their agenda is in line with theirs they agree with them and believe they would be good leaders/representatives.

Nothing could be further from the truth. These hacks would be terrible.

And the larger problem is that the youth of today are the voters of tomorrow...

Yeah and the Republicans of today are the corpses of tomorrow. I'm an independent, but the conservative world view as it exists currently in this country is such a departure from mine that it makes me despair of changing anything until these old dudes die off. So hurry up already.

You're right, there's no room for levity or facetiousness in this forum, and these poll results will be weighed heavily in the political arena.
Internet is serious business!

I would typically agree with you in this situation, since how they represent themselves is horrible in terms of trust and accountability for what they say, because, well, nobody cares what they say because its comedy.
now obviously I wasn't alive for this, but how many people, at first, would never have taken Reagan seriously?
for all we now, Colbert could be an intelligent individual, and sometimes presents himself in such a way, but he is essentially an actor, someone who stands up there on tv and acts in character. that character happens to be entertaining, and he makes it believable. however, maybe his personal views are much deeper than his tv persona shows?

it could very well be this guys are complete idiots too. I'm not making any claims here. Just presenting the idea that it's not new territory, just that their line of acting is a little different.

There are no idiots in comedy. There are varying levels of intelligence, to be sure, but you just can't be a successful comedian and be dumb. Even the lowest-brow humor has an analytical and exacting mind behind it.

Also, comedians are the ultimate speech-writers. They use words like a sword. John Stewart would simply shred anyone in a debate. It wouldn't even be close. He would not only win the debate but Fox And Friends would praise him for it the morning after.

Well I don't like the things Hillary has tried to do concerning the speed limit and video games (to name a few) so who knows.

I don't know about Colbert, but Stewart actually has some excellent ideas and the knowledge and charisma to back it up.
