I realise that's not going to happen often, but its a scary thought as to how many people are keeping there 3.6ghz p4's cool on air

why does that scare you? i dont want to argue with you as i have only seen you on the forums for a short while and i like what you have to say...BUT

for starters: dont you think intel would have figured out how to cool the CPU with air because 99.99999% of the people that buy them use air? what about laptops? my laptop is a 3.06ghz HT P4 and i sure as hell dont have water cooling. i decoded 2 dvd's yesterday and played some serious c&c generals: zero hour and it didnt melt :)

now, i am curious why you think it has to be anything but air cooled? does that number scare you? (100-105w i mean)...do you know what it is? not trying to point fingers and call you dumb, its just a straight forward question. i havent seen enough of your tech posts to know if you know anything, no offense :)

"too hot" depends entirely on the designed operating temperature the chip in question is supposed to run at. ;)

A hot-running chip like the Voodoo3 may be no big deal, but other chips designed to run much cooler would be DEAD if you felt it "too hot to touch".

Besides... it's bad practice to be stickin' yer fingers in around hot chips and spinning fans. Worse, you don't want to jiggle the heatsink off a critical component or anything...
