If it's illegal to yell FIRE! in a crowded theatre

Rubycon

What is wrong with these people?

Of course nobody is going to believe stories like that - it's funny to read but my side hurts from  when I got to the part with crop circles and ET. I cannot believe I got that far but you know. 😉

So what if someone put up a site in a more believable fashion and it did cause panic and spread of fear. People will sue anyhow but where does the liability sit? Say if the initiator lives in Changchun, China, for example.

Because it doesn't cause immediate danger. It'd be one thing if Yahoo.com was hacked and the hacker put up a message that says "THE US IS GONNA GET NUKED at 9AM EST". It's another if it's on some dumb website no one gives a sh!t about.

Well, the good part is that they're giving a definite date...which means they'll look like idiots tomorrow.

Not necessarily. That's akin to saying nobody will pay attention to the shouter because they aren't a firefighter or police officer.

Apparently they have spammed enough people to get attention. NASA's word is there is no chance of impact from a fragment - just a meteor shower. They also made a statement that the rumors on the internet are untrue.

Crowded is a subjective adjective.

It's a popular saying. If there's 1000 seats in the house and four exits with 52 inches of clearance you do the math.

Um, no, it's nothing like the "credibility" of the shouter because they're not a cop or firefighter.

If internet rumors spread it's called damage control for NASA or whatever agency to say "oh it's not true". That takes time. Yelling fire causes immediate danger because it affects everyone right there, right then. Your case in point took hours, days, weeks, however long it took. Start a poll and ask how many people heard that stupid ass rumor before you posted it. I'm going to say....maybe 2-3 people vote yes they heard it. That does not cause immediate danger, simply put.

Credibility of a website plays a large factor. You hear someone dies, you immediately go to Google to see if it shows up on CNN, Yahoo, MSNBC, etc. If it shows up on some podunk blog, no one gives a crap. That doesn't even come close to applying when a person yells fire at a movie theater.

You would NEVER believe that with the stupid chain letters that circulate around the web. 9/11 stuff, etc. It's amazing what people believe even after Y2K. I've had to have my email address changed many times because I got sick of them. Now they just feed them to the fish. 😉

Not everyone runs to whois.sc and checks the domain. (I admit I did just to see WHEN it was reg'd and of course it's brand new.)

Yes, they pass on chain mails. They don't frantically go calling their family and friends saying "OMG IF U DONT READ MY EMAIL AND REPLY BACK IM GOING TO DIE" 😛 I'm not doubting the gullibility of the average person but to think they're going to fear their life is in danger and cause immediate widespread panic is ridiculous.

How can they give such a broad range for the time of impact, yet know exactly where it will hit? Did they forget that the Earth rotates? Morons.

It's obvious. He has a DeLorean that goes 88 mph. 😛
