Tell the pc manufacturers to put their hardware in an enclosure half the size of a HTPC case with a couple undervolted small fans and see if it lasts 10 years. It's the price we pay for having high performance (at the time) in a box that isn't ridiculously huge. As technology advanced, the 360 hardware was able to take advantage of better manufacturing techniques, gpu/cpu combined on smaller dies, etc.. I wouldn't be surprised if most 360 slims are still running by time the next xbox is being retired.

Retro consoles last so long because the heat they generate is negligible. It's no revelation that solid state devices with no moving accessories like fans or optical drives can last a long time, unless they're filled with substandard components like capacitors.

Then why the F can't Sony and Microsoft get their act together and build consoles that last for more than two years? Seriously. That's one reason I haven't been into newer, higher-end consoles. I don't want to spend big bucks on games that I can't use in the future, because my console died, and I can't get a replacement.

I still have my NES, SuperNES, SMS, Genesis, Jaguar, 3DO, etc. They all still work.
I think I still have my (second) PSX.

Sony consoles just don't hold up. It's sad, and inexcusable.

How did you break your PSX? That machine is a marvel of build quality to me! That and the SNES.

If you drop a computer from a normal height it might break as well as ANY console! I am not inferring that the topic starter dropped his consoles or computer!

Does anybody leave their game system or systems on for lenghty periods without playing a game or doing something on PSN, Live etc...

I know these things are not PCs that can stay on for Months at a time. Or even years.
