Should I not bother taking the risks? The site claims it's secured, but without the lock it means it isn't, yes?

If you arent' talking to an https:// URL, and you see no lock symbol, then I can't see how it would be secured. You have to decide your risk threshold. Does your CC company offer one-time credit card numbers? Some cards will let you generate one-time use credit card numbers for specific transaction amounts.
