Thread title and subtitle says it all:

If I'm going to replace my brake rotors along with my pads anyway, is there any reason why I shouldn't let the pads wear until the audible scraping wear indicators start screeching?

This is for my daily driver. I'll be changing the pads and rotors myself. I already have the replacement parts, but current pads are at 20% and should have some life in them still.

Why not? The indicator is there to tell you they have reached the end of their usable life(or near to). So why replace them early?

Because he's already getting a brake service. He's going to have to replace them eventually so he might as well just have them do it while they're there. He'll save money on labor.

Whoops

EDIT: My opinion still stands. He might not be saving money, but he'll sure be saving time and effort. He'll have things apart anyhow, might as well take care of it while he's there.

Why'd you buy the pads and rotors if you still have 20% left in your brakes?

Honestly, you have the parts...I'd just do it when you get the time.

With 20% pad life left, unless you live where you go down a lot of steep hills, you should get about 4 - 8 more weeks of use before they need to change. As to putting in new rotors, it can not hurt except for the added parts cost.

Way more than that, unless he's going through a set of brakes every 5-10 months.. :Q
