If I'm connecting 3 PC's to the Linksys BEFSR41 without a hub do I need crossover cables?

Hello,
I'm planning on buying this Linksys router for my home network. I'm reading a discussion here about needing crossover cables for it to work without a hub. Is this true? I'm not sure if it makes a differnce since there not sharing the net connection also.

All I thought I would need was 3 regular Cat5 cables to hook the computers (3) up to the router make a LAN and share the net connection.

Thanks,
Justin Sampson

Correct. Crossover cable only if you're gonna add a hub or plug a PC directly into the uplink port.

You will not need any cross over cables. That router has a switch built in. A switch works kind of like a hub, only more efficiently. So, all you will need is the 3 regular Cat5 cables.

If you plan to hook the router into a Cable/DSL/Satellite modem you will need a crossover cable from the router's WAN port to the modem. All other connections into the router will be straight through CAT5 cable.

Not for me I had to use a crossover cable from my router to my satellite modem.

That's odd. I install broadband and have never had a problem going from WAN to modem with a straight patch cable.

I suggest that you read the manual for the Linksys router page 66. No crossover cables are needed, I have been working parttime for a cable provider installing a new rollout and have installed a lot of modems for customers with linksys cable routers and have never used a crossover cable. My home system uses this router and only straight cables, no crossover cables. Just put a crossover cable on it and then when it dont work change it.
Here is a quote form the router manual" Straight-through cables are used for connecting computers to a hub. Crossover cables are used for connecting a hub to another hub (there is an exception: some hubs have a built in uplink port that is crossed internally which allows you to link or connect hubs together with a straight-through cable instead"

the key word here is satelite modem. the question related to from router to computers.
