I don't know if it's still being offered but you can buy the $1 coins direct from the mint for $1 a piece. People with lots of disposable credit and good rewards programs were buying thousands of dollars worth of $1 coins from the mint on their credit cards and then using them to pay off the balance. It was reward point arbitrage.

They were offering free shipping. The mint had a huge surplus of the coins and used the free shipping thing as an incentive to buy the coins.

Get it in nickels man. My uncle told me that nickels are worth more in materials then they are in actual money. (7 cents in materials)

Thus you make tax free interest (40%) by getting nickels. Now he doesn't have a plan to get that $.07 for each nickel, but why let that stop you! Buy nickels today!

I read about a hedge fund manager doing this. It didn't make any sense to me because it's illegal to destroy US currency. The only way it would work is if you could get the treasury to buy them back at more than $.05 each.

Yep I remember when people were buying assloads of coins from the mint with credit cards to get rewards... I was like, "Well, shit. This is a great idea. Too bad I don't have a credit card and hundreds of dollars right now to toss around."

i know, i read about that scam a bit too late or i would have been ordering a pallet of quarters on my credit card.

no money to toss around. as soon as the quarters come in you cash them at your bank and pay off your cc bill. rinse and repeat.

Choose the year that the penny was minted. Some have potential to be worth twice the mint value for the metal

I save my all copper pennies. I usually use them to make copper washers. I couldn't buy one for 1¢. I think they were all copper until 1982, but I use 1976 as my cutoff. It's easy to remember, and I only need so many washers :^D

Also missed out when you could buy Treasury Bills on credit cards. Folks with hundreds of thousands in credit limits could rack up on new lines of credit when there was a 0% introductory rate. Wait for the bill to mature and then payoff the card with the principle. Risk free, non-taxable earnings. Pretty much free money.

I buy the ones advertised on Fox News! .9999 (that's four nines) pure 24 carat gold! The price is only going up!
(warning: sound)

14mg of pure 24k gold for only $9.95 plus $4.95 S&H instead of the originally planned issue price of $50!!!

(to save you the math, that's 72 cents worth of gold)

I saw that commercial, and the coin has a big "COPY" stamped on the indian head. They use on the website the actual US coin, but if you look carefully on the small video you will see the "COPY" stamp on the reflection.

I remember getting some of them from a change machine at a car wash. I was a little annoyed - give me something that fits in the change holder in the car, or that I could spend without feeling guilty. Finally, while on vacation I bought something for a couple bucks and paid the girl with the gold coins. She looked incredulous and asked me "are you really sure you want to spend these?!" I'll bet she still has them.

Our vending machines at work give them as change.
I have ~15 of them at my desk right now. (I cashed in a $20 a few days ago)

Some of the responses in this thread are confusing. They are NOT rare in Ohio.
Are they rare in other states?

I've never seen one in Hawaii, partly due to the lack of vending machines that would dispense them as change. I have a few in my change jar
